The episode opens with a flashback set three years earlier in the world Jason2 originally came from. Jason2, Leighton2, Amanda2, and Blair2 successfully activate the Box. The group celebrates their plan to pull the best ideas, technology, and resources from other realities to improve their own. Amanda2 warns Blair2 to finish her mental conditioning before traveling, given the psychological risks. Blair2 agrees.
In the present, Jason1, Daniela, and Charlie travel the corridor between worlds looking for a quiet place to settle. Charlie opens a door into a reality frozen in the 1970s: the United States never landed on the Moon, Nixon beat JFK, NASA was defunded, and technological progress (including microchips) stalled. The family hopes this backward world will make them harder to track.
They pawn jewelry for cash, check into a hotel, and start looking for fake documents and work. Charlie wants to attend school. Jason and Daniela tell him to stay under the radar. Jason visits the abandoned swimming pool that houses this world’s Box, while Daniela tries to enroll Charlie. The school registrar recognizes her as the local Daniela Dessen who moved from Chicago to California three years earlier and was involved in the PTA. There are Dessens in this world—they just live in California (Jason teaching English at Stanford, Daniela working at an art gallery in the Mission, Charlie at a magnet school).
Daniela tells Jason they can use the mix-up to get Charlie into school immediately, but missing documents will expose them soon. They need to study the local versions of themselves and may have to leave Chicago. Jason hires a private investigator, Mitchel2, to obtain fake papers and gather information on the California Dessens. Mitchel2 is confused by the request but takes the job.
Mitchel2 later delivers the documents and reports that the local family is in California. Jason pays him and leaves. Mitchel2, however, already knows there are two sets of Dessens. He has photographs of the California family and begins tailing Jason1. Unaware of the tail, Jason sends Charlie out and tries to create a romantic evening for Daniela. The attempt triggers a breakdown; Jason comforts her.
Elsewhere, time has passed since Leighton2 recruited another version of himself (referred to as Okulo). Okulo practices breathing and mental exercises meant to help control travel. A woman named Sandra interrupts and announces the arrival of Ryan3, who is stunned by the multiverse revelation. Leighton2 gives him a vial of the compound “Lilac Wings” so it can be replicated. In a world devastated by a Mount Rainier eruption and food shortages, Okulo proposes importing shade-tolerant cereals from a nuclear-ravaged reality. Leighton2 agrees and plans to contact that world’s Leighton using a map.
Ryan1 and Amanda2 locate the second Box in a seemingly utopian world (the one Jason1 previously left behind). Ryan1 wants to use it immediately to escape and confront Jason2. Amanda2 insists they first refine Lilac Wings and complete conditioning. They visit Leighton4 (who works at Ryan1’s former workplace). Amanda2 is wary because another Leighton twin once tried to kill her, but Leighton4 apologizes and says he rejected Leighton2’s grand “perfect world” plan. He warns that the Box will be moved soon. They refine the compound, train Ryan1, and Amanda2 (still dealing with PTSD) reluctantly joins him in the Box. Their goal is to find Jason2’s world.
Ryan1 and Amanda2 arrive in the same 1970s world as the Dessens and check into the same hotel. They miss Jason1 by seconds; he is heading to the Box to see if it can be deactivated. The next day they re-enter the Box and continue searching for Jason2’s reality. Mitchel2 tries to follow them into the Box but cannot travel without the compound. He is left standing inside it, trying to make sense of the duplicates and sudden disappearances. The episode expands the number of active Boxes, variants (multiple Dessens, Ryans, and Leightons), and competing goals: the Dessens want safety and a normal life, Leighton2 wants to engineer a better reality by harvesting other worlds, and Ryan1/Amanda2 want answers and a way home. Daniela’s paranoia and the family’s inability to stay hidden remain central tensions.
