After four episodes in the third season, we finally get to know what happened three months back and how Juliette became the Mayor. Silo Season 3 Episode 5, “Memory,” opens with Juliette getting rescued alongside Bernard, who is heavily burned; Sims officially declares that Bernard is no longer alive and orders that his body be taken to the crematorium room, though he is secretly taking him to the void, which explains why Bernard has been living there.
After the rebellion and Juliette's return from the outside, the Algorithm (now working through Camille as the new Head of IT) views Juliette, Bernard, and Lukas as existential threats. It orders Sims to eliminate them. Bodies must be wrapped in plastic for transport and incineration due to contamination fears from outside poison.
Sims is ordered out of the Vault while Camille stays. He is tasked with killing the one more likely to talk. Instead of fully complying, he fakes Bernard’s death (wrapping him while creating an airway so he can breathe), enlists Martha and Carla to help, and hides Bernard in the Digger Void. Martha nurses him. Bernard shares critical information: the Safeguard protocol, the existence of the other silos (roughly 50), communication frequency issues, and details from “the Order” (the IT-specific version of the Pact). The Order requires keeping people given “forgetting” drugs away from relics, because those items can restore memories.
To protect Juliette, Sims arranges (via Pike and others) for her to be elected mayor. This makes her too high-profile for easy elimination and places her on the official memory-suppression regimen (“vitamins”). Sims then has Regina (George’s ex and relic dealer) supply Nurse Amy with placebo/sugar pills so Juliette appears compliant to the Algorithm while her real memories can return. He also has Regina collect Juliette’s personal relics facilitated by trading “sheriff’s badges” linked to her fan following, with raiders looking the other way.
In the present, Sims brings Juliette (along with Martha, Kennedy/Patrick, and Lukas—people who “know too much”) to the gathered relics. Knox and Shirley are looped in to help relocate Bernard if needed. Handling the items triggers fragmented memories for Juliette but not full recall. The watch George gave her (passed via Pete’s sacrifice to Hank) is tried next; Hank joins the group and delivers it along with Pete’s final words of praise. It helps but is not enough.
Meanwhile, Carla meets Billings and reacts strongly to Orla Kent’s murder, blaming herself because she assigned Orla to investigate thefts. She shows him Critical Supply—the highly restricted, triple-approval area holding irreplaceable “Before Times” stock (including grow lights/bulbs) that cannot be manufactured in the silo. Empty boxes obscure true usage so no one can calculate the silo’s remaining lifespan. Long-running thefts (linked to the Harwoods) have reduced the bulb supply from ~50 years to only about 2 years. When the grow lights fail, food production collapses. Orla’s investigation into this is what got her killed.
The emerging insider group includes Juliette, Sims, Bernard, Martha, Kennedy, Lukas, Hank, Knox, and Shirley. Sims has effectively switched sides (or is playing a complex long game) for the greater survival of the silo. The breakthrough comes with George’s Pez dispenser. When Sims gives it to Juliette, her full memory returns. She remembers key details from Silo 17, including that they capped the Safeguard poison pipe (associated with level 14 / Judicial areas) and related information on how it might be stopped. She rushes to inform the others. Sims and Camille exchange a pointed look whose meaning is left ambiguous.
In the before times, Daniel and Helen discuss information from Sam: Per Stensen (billionaire AI advocate) was aboard the USS Nimitz during Operation Righteous Vengeance. That carrier flew only one sortie with planes using downgraded/unencrypted/analog communications—highly suspicious compared to other carriers. Sam may arrange a meeting with someone knowledgeable. While driving to follow up, their vehicle is remotely taken over and begins driving itself. This strongly implies AI or advanced nanotech involvement - possibly connected to earlier black-goo/nanite elements and characters like Henry.
The episode resolves Juliette’s amnesia arc, clarifies how Bernard survived and how she became mayor under surveillance, establishes Sims as an unexpected ally, highlights the silo’s finite resources crisis, and advances the Safeguard plot. It positions a core rebel group against Camille and the Algorithm while the Before Times storyline teases AI as a deeper antagonist. The dual cliffhangers set up the next phase.
Final Score - [8/10]
