TV Shows Reviews

The series based on Tutto Chiede Salvezza by Daniele Mencarelli follows the events that lead to Daniele getting compulsory treatment in a psychiatric hospital. He has no clue what lead him to this place that is full of people suffering from various mental illnesses. The first episode of the series begins with a few scenes from a party. Daniele, the lead character is too drunk. After leaving the club, he hits his car on a pole and enters his house. When he reached his bed, he passed out and doesn’t remember a thing after that. The next day, he finds himself at a Psychiatrist's Diagnosis and Treatment Ward. Nobody is willing to tell him why he was there, and he is reluctant to stay there.

Daniele shared the room with Gianluca (a Queer who is full of life), Mario (who used to be a primary school teacher), Madonnina (who always prays to Virgin Mary), Alessandro, and later on Giorgio also joins them. He doesn’t like the place and then soon gets called by Dr. Mancino, who asks him what he remembers. The doctor then tells Daniele that he’ll be in compulsory treatment for a week.

The concept of the White and Black part has been told, which is a nice way to show what a person suffering from bipolar disease feels. The white part is the good part of that person where they feel calm, and their emotions are under control. The black part is the state, which they reckon the most, and is about the phase where they feel like killing themselves.

Suspense is created in the first episode about what events led Daniele to this place. Upon being asked about the previous night, Daniele’s memories come back by looking at the fan. Various sounds triggered his memories, and he was able to remember what happened on ‘that night.’ The doctor also says that she rarely saw anyone in such a condition. He might be suffering from depression, and this was a psychotic episode. He also has reduced serotonin levels and thus was kept for a week at the psychiatric ward.

Everyone's suffering in that hospital and Daniele pities them. He thinks about what they have in common and what will he tell others when he gets out. There’s a lot of thinking that goes on this whole week. One night, he sees a girl in the hospital, she's crying, and it's almost love at first sight for both of them. She doesn't want to be here and also refuses that she knew Daniele at any point in her life.

There’s one thing that I failed to understand. Which psychiatric hospital allows cigarettes? Pino, the male caregiver talks badly about immigrants like black people, and it feels like the whole point of the series got diminished to this moment. The creators are making a show that talks about salvation, but at the same time, they show a character speaking badly about people of color.

Everything Calls for Salvations covers a full week while he was at that place, and the episodes have also been named so. He came back to his conscious state on Sunday, and so the episodes are named Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There are a total of seven episodes with a duration of 40 to 45 minutes each.

The name of the series has been kept so because we see people realizing their mistakes and being treated for the same. It's a whole journey that has been shown, right from not being aware to acceptance of the acts committed. In the last episode, we also see Daniele reciting a poem that shares the same title as the series. The time Daniele spent at the Psychiatrist Diagnosis and Treatment Ward made him realize a lot of things.

In my opinion, Everything Calls for Salvation is a good watch. You can’t expect any mysteries or a lot of suspense in this one. The entire series is about realizing what life is meant for and atoning for the sins committed in the past. Watching patients form a bond, sharing things, and even being in contact after they left is heart-touching. All the actors have done a great job in pulling off their roles. No series or movie is without romance and the same goes for Everything Calls for Salvation. Nina and Daniele initially never thought of being together, but by the end of the series, their chemistry is seen, and they both look adorable.

Final Score – [7.5/10]
