‘exception’ Netflix Series Review - Finding A New Home

In the series, a spacecraft carrying a 3D-printed crew of specialists is sent to terraform a new planet in a distant future where mankind is forced to leave Earth

TV Shows Reviews

Netflix’s brand-new anime ‘exception’ is directed by Yuzo Sato and is available to watch in both Japanese and English. It is about the copies of humans created by The Womb that are sent to find new places for the human species to inhabit. The target of these copies is to make Planet X-10 fit for human colonization.

Four human copies - Nina, Patty, Oscar, and Lewis are sent to a spaceship to study Planet X-10. Nina is a doctor, Patty is a botanist, and Lewis and Oscar together handle the spaceship. They form a great team together until someone plans to shatter their whole plan. While printing Lewis, an error occurs, and the real evil plan gets revealed.

An accident happens with Lewis’s body, and he is made into half human and half demon. He doesn’t remember his human self and now poses a threat to the rest of the crew members. The initial episodes were interesting as a lot of adventurous scenes have been shown. But, as more and more lies and twists get revealed, it seemed pretty hard to continue watching this show.

There’s no death for these characters as even if they die, the rest of the crew members can easily bring them back to life by taking a genetic sample and then making another copy using The Womb. To make the series interesting, at least some deaths are required. If we know that no character will die then what is the point of watching such sci-fi thrillers?

The plot had some messages to deliver, like how humanity shouldn’t be selfish and think about other living organisms as well. The series also teaches us to stick with our friends even in the hardest times. There’s one thing that the plot lacks, making characters, again and again, say that they’re humans when they’re not. The idea of The Womb, human printing, and finding a new planet for the human race was a great one, and despite that, it wasn’t woven correctly. The series appears dull and isn’t able to catch the attention of the audience.

In my opinion, 'Exception' hasn’t been made for a larger audience, it will rather be liked only by a small section of the audience who likes watching sci-fi content. It would have been better if the series was created taking a wider audience into context and if fewer medical terms were used. Nude scenes have also been included in the first episode of the series. There are eight episodes in total with an average duration of 30 minutes each. I particularly didn’t like the animation of the series as it seems too shiny, and regular anime watchers may also find it poor or below standard.

Final Score – [6/10]
