Movies Reviews

In this high-stakes political thriller, Frank Grillo takes center stage as Gunner, a tough, battle-scarred ex-Special Forces operative with a long trail of personal and professional wreckage behind him. Hardened by years of combat and a series of broken relationships, Gunner’s world is thrown into turmoil when his niece Julia (Eden Brolina) fiercely determined journalist, becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy.

Julia’s latest assignment involves investigating a clandestine group bypassing U.S. sanctions by smuggling Venezuelan oil into the country, a risky endeavor that leads her into treacherous territory. Her relentless pursuit of the truth soon catches the attention of powerful forces, and she is kidnapped by a ruthless faction determined to keep their illegal operation under wraps.

As Gunner races against the clock to rescue Julia, the film delves deeper into a complex web of corruption, international intrigue, and betrayal. Complicating matters further is Julia's mother, Olivia (Melissa Leo)a U.S. senator with her own hidden agenda. Olivia claims she initiated the oil smuggling operation to prevent foreign powers—namely the Russians and Chinese—from gaining control over Venezuela’s oil reserves. However, the plot spirals out of control when it becomes clear that the operation has been hijacked by rogue elements, led by Roman (Andy Garcia, and Moreao, who have their own motives.

The film’s pacing escalates as Gunner finds himself caught between saving Julia and untangling a conspiracy that threatens to destabilize international relations. Action scenes are sharp and well-executed, with Grillo’s combat expertise shining through in intense fight sequences. Yet, amidst the gunfire and explosions, the film grapples with the broader theme of loyalty—both familial and national—and the consequences of unchecked power.

Director John Swab crafts a tense and fast-paced narrative, blending geopolitical stakes with personal family drama. Frank Grillo embodies the role of Gunner with his signature intensity, bringing grit and a relentless drive to the character. The film balances action-packed sequences with moments of emotional depth, exploring the strained family dynamics between Gunner, Julia, and Olivia. Julia's transformation from a curious journalist into a key player in this political tug-of-war adds a layer of complexity to her character, played with conviction by Brolin.

While the film might follow familiar action-thriller tropes, it keeps the audience engaged with its sharp dialogue, well-crafted suspense, and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. Gunner’s journey is as much about confronting his fractured relationships as it is about rescuing Julia from imminent danger. The lingering question that remains: will he rescue her?

Overall, the movie delivers a satisfying blend of action, suspense, and political intrigue, bolstered by strong performances and a timely narrative that taps into global anxieties about power, corruption, and the shifting allegiances in international affairs. If you are into action, this is a must-watch for you.
