If you are someone who knows about the original sitcom by the same name that ran from 1987 to 1993, you should watch A Different World to relive some part of nostalgia. For those of you who don’t know, the OG show was known for its portrayal of life at a black college with a mix of comedy, friendship, romance, and campus life. This time around, we have a sequel with the same fictional university back in action, with a younger generation at the center of the plot. The plot revolves around Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Deborah arrives at Hillman as a freshman determined to experience college on her own terms and not dictated by anyone. Her parents' history has not left her side one bit, and her own personality, mistakes, and ambitions slowly help her enough to separate her from their shadow. Her relationship with Shaquille Johnson, her ex-boyfriend and an upcoming football player, gives her another experience in her freshman year. She is also surrounded by a lively and fun-loving group of people who are very different from her. Rashida works while also attending her classes at Hillman and becomes good friends with Deborah. Their friendship is one of the best angles that we saw in the plot.
There are both good and bad reviews of A Different World. In my opinion, the makers have ensured that the OG show remains in the shadow of the new one. There are characters from the previous installment that come and go throughout the show. And while that isn’t a bad thing at all, sometimes it feels a bit too much. The new show has scope for new characters. Plus, nearly four decades later, I doubt if the new generation of audience will actually recall the previous characters if they weren’t very prominent earlier. While that sure adds a layer of nostalgia to A Different World, sometimes what happened in the past is best kept in the past. However, having said all that, this is a small problem which can be easily ignored.
Coming to the good part, A Different World has made a significant change in its style. Instead of making the sequel the regular sitcom with laugh tracks, the makers have made sure that Hillman is portrayed as a contemporary college student. This means that the characters this time around deal with a more realistic plot filled with not only comedy but also emotions. That adds a layer of emotional arc to the show. We see a much more emotionally rich and charged narrative where feelings are explored and not just laughter. The cast, too, has done a great job in carrying forward the legacy.
However, I still felt that the depth was missing from A Different World. In many ways, there were deeper issues that could have been well explored but haven’t been. Perhaps had it been well developed in those aspects, the show would have become even more entertaining to watch. So all in all, while it does bring back nostalgia, A Different World isn’t without its flaws. Some can be ignored; some cannot.
