Kento Yamazaki is the kind of actor who has always been my favorite and who never disappoints me with his amazing works. Kento never fails to make me feel amazed because of his movies and series; his comebacks are always twice as good as the previous ones.
Golden Kamuy is a movie that I never thought would be this good. I don't know what to complain about about this movie. From the starting point to the ending, everything about this movie was so perfect, except one thing. Unfortunately, the movie ended with an open ending, but it seems like it was a huge hint for the potential second season of Golden Kamuy.
Golden Kamuy starts by showing a war in focus that takes place in Japan. The war is deadly and very disturbing at the same time. In the war, the first character introduced is Saichi Sugimoto. Saichi is a hero on the battlefield; he is popularly known as Immortal Sugimoto because he never dies and always survives, no matter how deep his injury is. After fighting in the Russo-Japanese War, Sugimoto set out on a new journey to get money for his plans, but things started to get easier for him when he learned that gold was hidden somewhere in Hokkaido.
Saicho lost his childhood friend in the war, and his backstory was not revealed in the first half, but after learning the truth of his backstory, I was very heartbroken and off. But let's come to the main topic. One day, Saichi Sugimoto met a homeless man who told him about a very popular and mysterious tale. He told Saichi about a man who stole the gold of the Ainu people, but he got caught after that. Surprisingly, he never disclosed the location, even when he was brutally tortured. So, he tattooed the location in a code-language way on the bodies of 24 convicts, and he then planned to escape the prison with the prisoners.
But the gold is still not found, and everyone is behind the gold. At first, Saichi didn't believe him, but then he believed the whole tale when he realized that the homeless man was trying to attack him when he was taking a nap. The next scene was more confusing for me because Saichi then found the body of that homeless man on the ice-covered road, who was attacked by a bear. There, he saw tattoos on the homeless man's body, and he realized that he was one of the convicts.
When Saichi was on his way to find the rest of the convicts and join the dots to find his way to the gold nuggets, he met a bear who tried to attack him. Then, right there, a new character, Asirpa, arrived. She saved him from the bear, and both of them joined hands to find the gold. But things were not as simple as they seemed. The real story started after that. The movie is full of twists and turns; even the ending was open, but it ended with such a cliffhanger that I will stay up all night thinking about it.
Moreover, the cinematography, plot, action scenes, and direction — everything is on point, and I didn't feel bored at all. This is the perfect movie for you if you are someone who loves watching brutal action scenes and suspenseful plots.
Final Score- [9/10]
