‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 3 Expected Release Date on Netflix, Filming Has Wrapped

The third season of Alice in Borderland completed filming in early April this year, and now the fans are curious about its premiere date. The filming which began in late September last year took more than six months to wrap up. The third season was filmed in multiple locations in Japan which includes Tokyo suburbs, Tochigi, Osaka, Wakayama, Hyogo, and Hiroshima.

The second season of the Japanese-language show premiered on December 22, 2022, and it took almost 10 months for Netflix to confirm its renewal. The finale of the second season was reportedly the final chapter of the series, but the success and popularity of the show made Netflix explore the third season option. The renewal was announced at the same time when the third season began filming.

The third season of ‘Alice in Borderland’ is currently in post-production and it is likely to take a few more months before we even get a full trailer. So, it is safe to assume that Alice in Borderland Season 3 is likely to be released sometime in early 2025 on Netflix. However, going by the trend of previous seasons, we cannot rule out the December 2024 premiere for the third season.

The first two seasons of the show were based on the hit manga of the same name, but the third season will go on a different route as there is no manga left to adapt. The only difference between the ending of the show and the manga was the Joker card shown at the end of the second season's finale. 

How Alice in Borderland Season 2 Ends?

Mira is revealed to be the Queen of Hearts, and her game is "Croquet," in which Arisu must play three rounds without quitting, regardless of who wins or loses the game. Mira admits that she created the Seven of Hearts game, which murdered Arisu's companions. This enrages Arisu, but he recognizes that if he kills Mira, they will never be able to finish the game. Mira's psychological taunts destroy Arisu's psyche, and he has a hallucination that he is in a mental institution with Mira as his therapist, attempting to persuade him to stop.

Usagi cuts Arisu's wrist and convinces him to return to save her, waking him up from his mental collapse. Mira is moved that their love was enough to pull Arisu out of her illusion, and she completes the croquet game with her. After the last game, all participants are offered the option to become "permanent residents" or not. Players who are still alive but choose not to remain wake up in the real world as survivors of a meteorite crash in Tokyo. Arisu's brother informs him that his heart stopped for one minute, and he was at the boundary between life and death. The survivors have no memory of their experiences in the other world, but some know one another, such as Arisu and Usagi, who meet at a vending machine and decide to go on a stroll together. The last view shows a table of playing cards, with an emphasis on the joker card.

What to Expect in Alice In Borderland Season 3?

The show has given a satisfactory ending that is the same as the manga it is adapted from. However, the joker card tease at the end can be elaborated upon in the next season. We never saw that card in the two seasons of the show and that’s because the Joker is the ferryman. He takes people to and fro from the borderlands.

So in the next season, we could see some of the players return back to that world and compete again. Also, it’s never satisfactorily explained what actually happened. As of now, it seems like the aliens' theory is true to an extent because of the meteor hint given. However, is the borderlands an alternate universe? Then why did the player exactly go there? Season 3 can help shed light on this matter and will help expand the world of the brilliant show and give fans something more to look forward to. After all, seeing Arisu, Usagi, and more return back will be fascinating to see again.
