Goyo, an autistic man, falls for Eva, a mother of two. Will his love see a silver lining?

Movies Reviews

Goyo is a type of movie you will prefer to see only once in your lifetime because it fails to capture your attention. While the story is beautiful it is also quite predictable. The film introduces us to Goyo (Nico Furtado), a man with Asperger’s syndrome, who serves as a devoted museum guide at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. Goyo is a very meticulous man, his life works in a proper order and routine. We also see how involved he is with art but left painting until one day, mesmerized by Eva he picks up his brush again. Who is Eva, you may ask? Eva is a new security guard at the same museum in which Goyo works.  Her presence stirs the still waters of Goyo’s well-ordered life. Eva, a mother of two, is grappling with a failed, abusive marriage. Her life, once stable, now feels like it’s unraveling, and she is searching for something to anchor her.

Despite their differences, Goyo and Eva find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other. Their initial encounters are marked by a quiet curiosity and mutual admiration. Goyo’s unwavering passion for art and his unique perspective on life captivate Eva, offering her a glimpse of a world where beauty and meaning can be found in the smallest details. Conversely, Eva’s presence challenges Goyo to step outside his comfort zone and embrace the unpredictability she brings.

As they spend more time together, their bond deepens, blossoming into a tender connection that transcends their struggles. Through shared moments of vulnerability and understanding, they begin to navigate the complexities of their lives, finding solace and strength in each other’s company. Their relationship becomes a beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative power of love and the beauty of finding companionship in unexpected places. But can we expect a relationship? This is what the plot deals with.

As mentioned earlier, the plot is not particularly original. It follows a familiar narrative that you may have encountered in other films. Due to its lack of novelty, the story struggles to leave a lasting impression. The characters and their journey, while endearing, tread well-worn paths that don’t offer much in terms of fresh perspectives or unexpected twists. Consequently, the film fails to stand out in a crowded genre, resulting in an experience that is pleasant but ultimately forgettable.

What truly stands out in the film is the exceptional acting. Nico Furtado delivers a show-stopping performance as Goyo, capturing the nuances of his character with remarkable authenticity. His portrayal brings Goyo to life, creating a deep and personal connection with the viewer. Furtado’s ability to convey Goyo’s inner world through subtle actions and expressions is nothing short of captivating, making him the heart and soul of the film.

Equally impressive is Nancy Dupláa’s portrayal of Eva, a mother of two grappling with a troubled marriage. Dupláa brings a raw intensity to her role, imbuing Eva with a palpable sense of vulnerability and strength. Her performance is both powerful and nuanced, making Eva's struggles and resilience deeply relatable. The chemistry between Furtado and Dupláa is electric, their interactions filled with genuine emotion and depth, elevating the film beyond its familiar plot.

Together, these performances transform the film into a compelling character study, where the emotional journeys of Goyo and Eva resonate long after the credits roll. Their portrayals breathe life into the narrative, making the film memorable despite its conventional storyline. Hence you can give this movie if you are looking for something serious.
