This documentary takes us through the lives of former SEAL soldiers who battle PTSD.

Movies Reviews

This documentary is a profound reminder of how tough the lives of soldiers can be and the impact it has on the soldiers. The PTSD remains with them for a long time, and it is not always caused by war. Tough training, too, can take a toll on mental health. In Waves and War, those who served in the United States Marine Corps and Navy SEALs come forward to tell us their battle with PTSD that took place while they served and once they were out of the service. The way they describe their training and the visuals that we see is just a glimpse of how tough things can get for them. Through interviews and testimony, this firsthand description is a start reminder of what these men do for us.

Right at the start, there is a sense of seriousness that we see. Former SEALs come forward and narrate their stories while pictures from their younger days are shown to us. These men of steel don’t break down while recalling whatever happened to them. We know from them that it's not the physical pain that breaks down someone solely; it is also the mental pain and agony that plays its role. Yet our SEALs are not the ones to give up. They fight with themselves even when they can no longer recognize the person they see in the mirror every morning.

Where the makers deserve a big shout-out is the use of animation to describe the former SEALs' feelings. That is important because hearing a story is one thing, but to see it being supported by visuals leaves a lasting impact. You must be wondering how it can be visual? And for that very reason, I urge you to watch the documentary. The makers have done a great job in conveying and bringing to life, particularly, the feelings of the people.

Simultaneously, while narrating their stories, we also understand what motivates people to join one of the elitist yet toughest units on earth. These soldiers tell us that some joined because their father was in the same profession, while some joined in sheer ambition. Do they regret it? Hell no. That is something you can make out from their voices, even after the PTSD they carry with them. But that’s not where the storyline ends. Once out of service, their very career that they once served with pride comes back to haunt them. Many in the documentary claim that they recall all they had to do while in uniform, and that is what scares them. Some even have a fallout with their families because of this. Towards the end of it, we are shown that men take part in an experiment that can address their issues. There are a lot of vulnerable scenes where we see these toughest men break down- a reminder that even men can have such moments.

The pacing of the movie is a bit slow, but that is very intentional. You need to see and feel every word these men come out to say. Only then will you understand their pain. So overall, this is a great watch.
