If you have been missing a romantic comedy to watch for your long weekend, You, Always comes as a breath of fresh air. The story follows Dr. Jen Bell, a dedicated GP who is doing her level best to juggle motherhood, her profession, and her volunteering work at Marine Search & Rescue. Things in her life change when her feelings for her best friend Ethan remain unresolved, as she still hasn’t confessed to him. She meets Patrick, a charming author, and this chance encounter opens a new door. So now we have a love triangle with Jen trying to figure out who she is in love with.
Before you say anything, yes, the plot is something we have seen many times before. But sometimes even familiar things can make you feel good, right? And if you are someone who has loved watching romcoms, You, Always is a great watch. There is a lot of simplicity and honesty in the efforts that have been put in. That is what makes the movie such a sweet watch. Even after developing a love triangle, the makers of You, Always don’t go ahead to complicate things more. As and when things move ahead, you will see what Jen ultimately does and where it leads her. That is where the plot manages to keep itself away from the ones we have seen so far.
Apart from the plot, what makes You, Always a great watch is the backdrop in which it is set. The lush and beautiful landscapes of Queensland are so beautiful to watch that at one point, you will feel like booking a flight and landing straight up there to experience the life Jen is living. The cinematography of You, Always has captured Queensland amazingly. It makes you fall in love with a place that you haven’t even seen in real life.
The acting is great too. Jessica De Gouw as Dr. Jen Bell is beautiful in her role. There is a lot of warmth and emotion she brings to her character, which is equally beautiful to watch. Adrian Grenier and Desmond Chiam, in their respective roles, add that perfect charm that is required to give the film a perfect balance. The chemistry that the characters feel is natural and not at all forced.
The character development is also worth noting. Compared to the first half, in the second half, the character of Jen shows so much difference that even those watching the movie will be amazed. And that is the beauty of the plot. It tells us what a journey of self-discovery can look like.
In addition to all this, the pacing of the movie is even. The makers have ensured that the plot is neither dragged nor rushed when we see Jen and her life choices. That makes the overall viewing experience worth a watch. We are given a lot of time to sit and grasp what exactly has happened in the life of Jen, so none of it can ever feel rushed. Overall, if you have been waiting to watch something like this, You, Always is your go-to movie for the weekend.
Final Score- [7/10]
