Gamera Rebirth is a Netflix original anime series that follows the adventures of four kids who witness the emergence of the turtle kaiju Gamera in 1989 Tokyo. The series is directed by Shusuke Kaneko, who previously helmed the acclaimed Gamera trilogy in the 1990s. The animation is done by ENGI, a studio founded by Kadokawa, Sammy Corporation, and Ultra Super Pictures.

The series consists of six episodes, each lasting about 40 minutes. It features a stellar voice cast, including Hisako Kanemoto as Boko, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Joe, Aki Toyosaki as Junichi, and Subaru Kimura as Brody. The series also boasts an impressive soundtrack composed by Kow Otani, who also scored the Gamera trilogy and Godzilla: Final Wars.

Gamera Rebirth is a homage to the classic kaiju films of the Showa era, but also a modern update that appeals to new and old fans alike. The series combines thrilling action scenes, emotional character development, and stunning visuals to create a captivating story that pays tribute to the legacy of Gamera.

The story begins in the summer of 1989 when four kids in Tokyo encounter a mysterious giant turtle that emerges from the sea and flies into the sky. They soon learn that the turtle is Gamera, a guardian of the Earth who protects humanity from giant monsters called Gyaos.
The kids are Boko, Joe, Junichi, Boko, and Brody. As Gamera fights to save the world from the kaiju threat, he also faces human enemies who want to capture or destroy him. The kids must help Gamera overcome these challenges and prove that he is not a menace, but a hero.

Gamera Rebirth is a well-crafted anime series that delivers on its promise of bringing back the legendary kaiju in a spectacular fashion. One of the strengths is the animation quality, which is superb and consistent throughout the series. The character designs are expressive and appealing, while the kaiju designs are faithful to their original counterparts but also updated with more details and realism. The action scenes are fluid and dynamic, showcasing Gamera's abilities and personality. The backgrounds are rich and colorful, depicting various locations in Japan with accuracy and beauty.

I am quite impressed by the voice acting, it is excellent and fitting for each character. The voice actors convey the emotions and motivations of their roles with skill and nuance. The dialogue is witty and natural, with some humor and references to kaiju lore. The sound effects are realistic and immersive, enhancing the impact of the action scenes. The music is epic and atmospheric, creating a sense of tension and excitement.

How can a show be great without its heart? The story has impressed me mostly, which is engaging and well-paced. The plot is simple but effective, following Gamera's journey as he faces different kaiju and human adversaries. The series balances the action scenes with character moments, developing the relationships between Gamera and the kids, as well as among the kids themselves. The series also explores themes such as friendship, courage, loyalty, responsibility, and environmentalism.

The series could benefit from introducing more characters from different countries and cultures, especially since Gamera is a global phenomenon that affects everyone on Earth. It is just a generous suggestion, not a complaint.

I want to learn more about a few things, such as how Gamera came to be, why he has a bond with Boko, or what his ultimate goal is. The series could provide more background information or hints about these mysteries, without revealing too much or spoiling the suspense. The series could introduce more new or creative elements to make each battle more unique and surprising.

The series is not perfect, and it has some flaws that could be improved in future seasons or adaptations. However, the series is still a great achievement and a worthy addition to the Gamera franchise. The series is a must-watch for kaiju fans and anime lovers, as well as anyone who enjoys a good adventure story with lovable characters and epic battles.

Final Score – [7/10]
