‘Making It Up’ (2023) Netflix Movie Review - The Highs and the Lows

Maquíllame Otra Vez follows Ana and Rita, who are broke, so when Alex offers them a job, they say yes to the gig and to a big ol’ mess.

Alex is a woman whose highs are high, but the lows are extremely low. Once a successful makeup artist, she fell into the trap of drugs. What was initially prescribed to cure anxiety, she started popping them up with booze. The result is that she can no longer do makeup which was the sole source of her livelihood. Ana was new in the city and a friend of Alex gets help from her to establish an income source. Gradually, she learns what Alex has been going through.

This movie teaches you about sisterhood and how one can support each other in their lives. I liked the scene in which Ana helped a bride run away from her wedding. She knew that after doing this, she may no longer receive worth but she helped her because it was the right thing to do. The event manager of this wedding didn’t fire her rather she offered her two more events to work at. Sometimes you have to do things that are wrong from others' perspective because they feel right to you. There is no shame in doing what you feel is right. Ana wanted to help her friend Alex, but she cheated on her and looted her hard-earned money by saying lies.

The costumes and makeup are so glittery and flashy in this 81-minute film. Those who like to do make-up will see different styles. Just like Jules in Euphoria became popular for her eye makeup, Ana and all the other characters in this film can be seen with various eye makeup. There is no plot in this film and it seems like a daily journal of Alex with the twist only being it is narrated by someone else. If you want to sum up its plot then it is just about two friends who are moving in opposite directions of life. The only good thing about Making It Up is that it is visually appealing. Vibrant colors have been used in glitters and makeup. The find only shines in this department. Other things like plot or cast or character development is a failure. Heavy inspiration from Euphoria has been taken, and I think some inspiration from its plot could also have been taken. Those who have seen Euphoria will realize the similarities this Spanish film has.

The beginning of the film is horrible. It shows us things happening so that which makes it difficult to understand what is going on. It is after 10 minutes that we start to catch up with the plot. The way the narrator was telling things, I thought that this might go in a good direction, but I realized that this film is a disaster when I reached the middle of it and nothing substantial happened. It is an overstretched film that combines the story of a drug addict and friendship. For those who want to watch a good title then this one is not the one as there are many things that you’ll start ignoring as the film proceeds. Rather, I would suggest going for Euphoria again if you are into makeup. Also, for those who want a light pick that just lets them eat their popcorn without any drama, this might be a good choice for you.

Final Score – [3.5/10]
