‘Red Queen’ (2024) Prime Video Series Review - Clever and Promising

With a total of seven episodes, Red Queen Season 1 was able to intrigue the audience throughout its duration. The pilot episode was intriguing and different from what the crime series usually begins with. This Spanish crime series revolves around gruesome murders and how Antonio helps in solving them. She is a woman with the maximum IQ, however, she has faced a massive loss. Her husband is in a coma after suffering from an irreversible injury and her child too is nowhere to be seen. Antonio has some hallucinations and for the same, Detective Jon and Mentor can be seen giving her some red capsules.

The scenes that show her suffering from mental issues are heartbreaking, like the opening scene of her trying to take her own life or the one in which she struggles to stay alone in the car. The woman can’t help herself but her intelligence is being used by the Police Department to solve a series of crimes.

The title of the series comes from a secret law enforcement agency in which Antonio agrees to work. This decision didn’t go in her favor as everything she holds dear will be left in jeopardy.

Whenever Antonio visits the crime scenes, she can be seen reconstructing the situation and going back in time leading to her understanding of what might have possibly happened. The visuals of such scenes are alluring and the audience gets attracted to the fact about what more she can do if she had a good peace of mind.

The intensive investigations of multiple murders keep the audience hooked to their screens and wondering about what is going to happen next. Antonio despite having a great IQ suffered a lot in her personal life. She can’t tolerate anyone touching her even Jon who worked with her to find the killer.

It was highly unexpected when she disclosed the similarities between the first kill and the kidnapping of the daughter of a millionaire. She saw something like this coming in the future and wasn’t left surprised by it. By looking at the things in common, Antonio was quick to realize that it was the work of the same person.

Being based on a novel that I haven’t read, it can not be commented on whether it is an excellent adaptation or not. Initial episodes set the bar of expectations for the show high and the way the killer’s eyes are revealed, the audience will want to find his identity soon.

The rhythm between Antonio and Jon takes its time to establish, but with time, these both become excellent partners and serve an integral role in catching the killer. Played by Vicky Luengo, Antonio’s character has so many layers to it. The role of Jon is played by Hovik Keuchkerian and he is the one who is usually seen bringing smiles to the faces of the audience through his effortless humor.

Final Score – [7/10]
