HBO limited series ‘The White House Plumbers’ has officially begun filming today in Newburgh, New York. The five-part series is based on The Watergate scandal, which was one of the biggest political scandals in the history of the United States involving the administration of U.S. President Richard Nixon from 1971 to 1974 that led to Nixon's resignation.

Director David Mandel confirmed the start of filming via his Twitter account. Mandel also revealed that he is returning on the field nearly after one and a half years.

Created and written by Gregory and Huyck and directed by Mandel, The White House Plumbers is based partly on public records and the book Integrity by Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh. The series tells the true story of how Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Harrelson), and G. Gordon Liddy (Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they zealously were trying to protect.

The series star-studded cast includes Game of Thrones alumna Lena Headey, who is returning to HBO with a lead role opposite Woody Harrelson, Justin Theroux, and Domhnall Gleeson.

Lena Headey is playing Dorothy Hunt, a mother of four and active CIA asset, Dorothy tries to hold her family together while entangling herself in her husband’s catastrophic misadventures; Domhnall Gleeson is playing White House Counsel John Dean; Woody Harrelson is playing E. Howard Hunt, former CIA officer and husband of Dorothy Hunt; and Justin Theroux is playing G. Gordon Liddy, Finance Counsel for the Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CRP).

The project hails from Veep executive producers Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck, David Mandel and Frank Rich, and Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad’s The District. The limited series is a co-production between HBO and wiip.

Harrelson and Theroux executive produce with Gregory, Huyck, and Mandel; alongside Fleischer and Bernad for The District; and Rich, who has a deal at HBO and exec produces the network’s Emmy-winning drama Succession. Paul Lee, Nne Ebong, and Mark Roybal executive produce for wiip, Len Amato for Crash&Salvage. Gregg Fienberg also executive produces.
