If you are someone who has loved watching family dramas, Chumbak might prove to be a sweet watch. Set in Chumbak Colony, the series follows five families whose lives are largely intertwined. One disagreement inside one household quickly becomes common knowledge for others, with celebrations, relationships, troubles, and personal problems inevitably turning into collective matters.
The plot revolves around Rajni and Kuku Merchant. Their marriage is going through a difficult phase, with divorce contemplated on Rajni’s mind. However, in Chumbak colony, as I mentioned earlier, anything happening in a family becomes a matter for everyone. Their neighbors get involved, which creates a series of misunderstandings and comedy of errors. Meanwhile, Mickey and Twinkle are a younger couple who wish to have some personal space. But that too looks like a far-fetched dream because the neighborhood cannot provide that. The couple frequently attempts to spend time together but gets interrupted by their neighbors.
There is no doubt that Chumbak is a light watch. The makers have tried to add serious issues with a touch of comedy. That works pretty well as we are entertained out and out by the plot. Though not all episodes are out yet, from what we have, the dose of laughter remains high as the plot progresses. There is a sense of warmth in the show. The nosy neighbors are irritating, and while watching, they do feel overbearing. That is what was the aim of the makers, and they did succeed in showing that. The only issue is that the plot is highly predictable. As I said, it does become a full-blown family show, with the jokes feeling the same throughout. I was hoping for something new, and yes, while the plot is somewhat new, if not completely, many parts of it feel as if we have already seen it before.
The pacing remains brisk, which is a great thing. The makers don’t really rush but ensure that the pace isn’t slow. Everything is maintained well. That is one of the biggest highlights. Other than that, the comic timing of the cast is amazing. When you watch the show, you will get plenty of scenes that make you laugh hard. And that is a unique thing, as the show also deals with serious issues such as divorce. In between all this, making a plot that manages to make the audience laugh while also ensuring that the topic is not ridiculed is a mastery that the makers of Chumbak know how to handle.
We also get to see some character development. The reason I used the word “some” is because the whole of the series isn’t out yet. That means there is still a lot left. But in these few episodes too, the makers have ensured that with each episode, the cast grows well, and that is a great level of development that we are seeing.
Now, coming to the cast, who made Chumbak such a pleasant watch. Neena Gupta and Devan Bhojani remain the central attraction. Their portrayal of characters is flawless. The rest of the cast, such as Arjun Bijlanu, Helly Shah, Sumeet Vyas, Manasi Parekh, Sumeet Raghavan, Sandeepa Dhar, Delnazz Irani, Anat V Joshi, and Amyra Dastur, all add to the chaos and humour that the show has to offer. So all in all, Chumabk is a great family sitcom that everyone should watch for the plot and the cast.
