TV Shows Reviews

Just as you thought you were over Chumbak Season 1, Netflix released the next part for us to enjoy. The next part picks up where Season one left off with the many storylines in it. One of the central plots revolves around Ruhaan serving a divorce notice to his mother, Priya, which prompts the Chumbak Colony residents to conduct a pretentious mock courtroom at their home. We see Ronit becoming the judge while Mickey and Aditya take over the opposing sides. Mickey also has a possible love affair, which gives the women of the colony a matter to investigate. How much is true or not, you will understand only once you are done watching Chumbak season 2.

We see both good and bad things in this season. Starting with the good things, the plot is entertaining.  It is like watching those old family shows such as Khichdi. The makers sure manage to bring a wave of nostalgia when one watches Chumbak. The multiple storylines also keep you engaged all the time. The characters feel warm and friendly and, to some extent, quite relatable as well. This makes it a full-on family package to watch.

Coming to things that don’t work, the plot feels very predictable. The thing about comedy as a genre is that if a touch of uniqueness is not added, one can get easily bored while watching the show. Even with an ensemble cast, sometimes saving the narrative from becoming too predictable is an issue. While the multiple subplots are smoothly woven and interconnected, sometimes it makes the whole storyline chaotic. As viewers, we are shown so much that it is hard to keep track and watch the full show in one go. With so many characters embedded inside a show, the overall view of the show becomes chaotic, with some plot lines feeling unnecessary. Perhaps, if we think from the makers' point of view, they don’t really wish to make a show that is path-breaking. That is why they continued to make it a traditional sitcom format rather than experimenting with the plot.

The biggest strength of the show remains Neena Gupta. As Rajni, she balances sarcasm and vulnerability without making the plot feel melodramatic. Her scenes with Deven Bhojani remain one of the central attractions even in season 2. Bhojani’s Kuku continues to provide some of the funniest moments and, by far, in my opinion, is also the best character. He has innocent confessions that add to the chaos and confusion. Along with the veteran actors, the supporting cast also contributes well. Manasi Parekh makes her role of Priyanka as a yapper who comes across as funny. Sumit Vyas’s character Aditya Khanna has more depth this time around, while Arjun Bijlani and Helly Shah remain cool and fun as Mickey and Twinkle. I must say, the character development in the second part of Chumbak has been much better compared to the first part.

The concept of pacing is not for shows like these. Even so, the speed is moderate enough for us to understand. So, to conclude, if you wish to watch something fun and feel that warm of a nostalgic show, Chumbak is what you should watch.
