Movies Reviews

"OOTD" (Outfit of the Day) centers around the life of Nare, a talented young Indonesian fashion designer trying to make her mark in Birmingham's competitive fashion world. Nare's passion for her craft is evident from the start. She has a unique eye for fabrics, textures, and patterns, effortlessly blending traditional and modern influences. Her creativity is fueled by her ambition to succeed in a foreign city, and she surrounds herself with supportive friends, though her world is far from perfect.

Nare's close friend Mala, who is in an abusive marriage with her husband Andrew, presents a subplot that contrasts Nare's otherwise focused and driven nature. Despite Nare's best efforts to help Mala escape her toxic relationship, Mala keeps returning to Andrew, trapped in the cycle of abuse. This ongoing conflict causes tension between the two women, highlighting the struggles of friendship when one person is unable to change their circumstances. Nare's frustration grows as she watches someone she cares about remain in a damaging situation, powerless to intervene effectively.

Simultaneously, Nare's personal life takes an unexpected turn when she begins to develop romantic feelings for her friend Baggas. Their blossoming relationship brings a sense of warmth and support to her life. Baggas even suggests a bold idea—hosting a unique fashion show titled "Fashion on the Street"—a concept that excites Nare and aligns with her vision of breaking boundaries in the industry. His enthusiasm and support show how deeply he believes in her talent, and he even offers to photograph the event, cementing their partnership both professionally and personally.

However, just as things seem to be falling into place, Nare discovers she is pregnant. The news throws her into a spiral of uncertainty. At a point in her life where she’s focused on her career and building a name for herself, a child was the last thing she expected. Aksa, the father of the child, reacts with joy and excitement, announcing the news prematurely and adding pressure on Nare. His enthusiasm stands in stark contrast to Nare’s reluctance, creating a tense dynamic as she grapples with this life-altering decision.

"OOTD" is a poignant exploration of personal and professional dilemmas, touching on themes of love, ambition, and the struggle to balance personal desires with unexpected challenges. However, the plot follows a predictable trajectory and doesn't introduce anything particularly fresh or innovative. Many of the story elements—such as the love triangle, the career-versus-family dilemma, and the struggles of a friend trapped in an abusive relationship—are familiar tropes that have been explored in countless films. While these themes are emotionally charged and relatable, the film misses opportunities to dig deeper or present them in a more original or unexpected way. As a result, the narrative feels somewhat conventional, lacking the creative spark that could have made it stand out.

As far as acting, the actors have done a good job. Jihane Almira as Nare shines. She is calm and poised just as her role demands. The rest of the cast, Rangga Natra, Asmara Abigail, Derby Romero, Givina Lukita, etc also do a good job of supporting a but obvious plot.

Final Score- [5/10]
