TV Shows Reviews

Veil of Shadows dives deep into the enchanting worlds of fantasy and drama, weaving a spell that keeps you utterly captivated from the very first frame. The story centers on Lu Wuyi, a graceful and mysterious nine-tailed fox spirit who joins forces with her sister on a dangerous quest to capture a formidable demon. What appears to be a simple, straightforward mission at first soon reveals itself to be a far more intricate, multi-layered journey brimming with unexpected twists and hidden depths. Hidden agendas, fragile alliances between people where no one can be trusted, and whatnot shape most of the plot. When they join the rival hunters, that’s when they understand what they have gotten themselves into.

While the plot is good, what favors Veil of Shadows is its use of psychological conflict over action. Instead of relying solely on the typical battle tactics that we get to see around, the plot indulges in using identities, shifting loyalties, etc., to frame the plot. This is what makes the plot stand out the most amongst the plots we have seen. The entire story spread across 29 episodes is unpredictable, which means you will always be guessing, but you may never reach the right answer easily.

However, even with all its strengths, Veil of Shadows isn’t without its flaws in the eyes of some viewers. One frequent point of criticism is its slow pacing, which can gently lull many into losing focus and drifting away from the story’s intricate threads. The pacing moves at such a slow rate that one cannot help but get irritated by that. At one point, you will question the decision of the makers when they tried to make a big drama with the slowest speed ever. A good plot always requires good paving, which Veil of Shadows misses greatly.

Other than that, the overall duration of the show is pretty long. One needs to have a good amount of time in hand to invest because, without that, the show is pointless to watch. We have to understand that time and again, long shows can be irritating to watch. This can make many viewers lose their interest in continuing with the show because, let’s not forget, even the pacing factor is there, which negatively impacts the show.

However, there are many plus points as well that we get to see. For example, the overall execution of the show is amazing. The makers have ensured that the filming gives us a good view of the backdrop and the era in which Veil of Shadows is set. The costumes that the cast wears are also highlighted.

When it comes to acting, every member of the cast has delivered notable performances.  For example, Ju Jingyi, as Lu Wuyi, comes across as someone who gives it a thought before taking any step. Ju Jingyi masterfully captures the delicate, intricate subtlety of her character with a performance so richly layered and emotionally precise that it lingers in your mind like a haunting echo long after the credits begin to roll. Joseph Zeng is equally captivating as Wu Shiguang, a brooding, revenge-obsessed soul whose complex inner turmoil, marked by simmering rage, hidden pain, and unexpected vulnerability, he brings vividly to life with remarkable depth and intensity. All in all, if you’re someone who loves immersive fantasy psychological dramas, Veil of Shadows is an absolute must-watch that will stay with you.
