C-dramas are known for the royalty they present the stories with, especially when it comes to historical plot lines. Ashes to Crown lives up to the same expectation. The plot follows Chu Zhao, the daughter of a military general, whose life changes due to a betrayal. She believed that she was married for love; however, she ended up becoming a pawn for Xiao Xun, a power-hungry and greedy nobleman who wants to satisfy his quest for political dominance. This betrayal results in her losing her life and her clan. But things change yet again when Chu Zhao is reborn on the very eve of her wedding. Now armed with the memories of her previous life and also remembering the betrayal, she is determined for vengeance and also not to repeat the mistakes that led to her downfall. Instead of becoming yet another drama of revenge, the makers take a slightly different approach with Ashes to Crown. They establish Chu Zhao as a strategic player in the game of politics, law, and military affairs, the one who takes every decision thoughtfully. And mind you, she isn’t alone in this battle. Instead, this time round, she has Xie Yanlai, the illegitimate son of the Xie family. He slowly and steadily rises to the rank of becoming the most sought-after leader in the military. Gradually, these two form a bond full of mutual respect and similar struggles.

So of course, I agree that the plot is nothing new, and we have seen plots like these before too. But here the main aspect is how the plot has been executed. There is no doubt that the makers have managed to create magic in this revenge drama. Even the angles of romance aren’t something that comes up directly. Instead, it starts slowly and steadily, preparing the audience for what is going to come.

The backdrop captures the feel of a historical drama pretty authentically. It takes you back in time, and for once, you might forget that you reside in the 21st century. The costumes, the hairdo, and the weapons used all indicate the historical references of the show.

What might leave many divided is that each episode is 45 minutes long and there are a total of 24 episodes.  But once you start watching Ashes to Crown, you won't feel that the plot has been dragged. In fact, with the twists and turns offered, you will not realize when the 24 episodes come to an end. That’s also because the pacing is pretty good. Things don’t go very fast or very slow. Instead, it follows an even pacing throughout the runtime. This helps in ensuring that your curiosity is maintained in the show overall.

The only issue is that the plot becomes predictable after a while. And right from the start, that feeling is there because rebirth, revenge, and marriage are all plots that have developed repeatedly. But if you are someone who is ready to ignore all that, the show is worth at least one watch. So if you are someone who loves C-dramas and loads of history in them, Ashes to Crown is what you should be watching. It is entertaining, intriguing, and worth every watch.
