There was nothing new in You+Me – Against the World. The plot revolves around Alma Lancaster, a young woman caught between what her family expects of her and what she actually wants. She is expected to pursue law, but her heart lies in filmmaking. Hence, she decides to give herself one year to follow her passion. Soon enough, she finds herself paired with Vadim Arcadi, a classmate who is shrouded in rumors and suspicion. Vadim is not someone you can approach easily. He is withdrawn and carries a reputation that makes him quite questionable. Some even say that he is into drugs. Alma remains wary of him. Slowly and steadily, as they spend more and more time together, that distrust fades away and is followed by attraction.
And I don’t think the audience needs more information on what happens next because whatever you are thinking is right. The plot of "You+Me – Against the World" is so predictable that there is nothing left to watch once you have managed to figure out the majority of the plot. It is a typical case of a good boy meeting a bad boy, and both fall for each other. I am not sure what it will take for filmmakers to stop making plots with these similar narratives. There is not even a single attempt made to make this plot less predictable. It is like the makers didn’t take any pains whatsoever. And this is why watching this movie can be highly annoying, because what do you mean all we are shown is the same old love story? The second half of the film is even more annoying. It is as if the makers are confused about whether they wish to focus on whether Alma should be given some sort of independence or should they show her falling in love. This is what creates a lot of mix-and-match, and as a result we get no clarity from Alma’s point of view. All of this is what makes the entire watching experience highly frustrating.
The only thing that saves You+Me – Against the World is the acting and the cast. Vittoria Di Savoia as Alma Arcadi brings a wave of freshness and newness. She gives us perfect acting as Alma, who is shown to be a reserved and shy girl. She takes her character's journey to a whole new level of discovering her identity and learning to make her own decisions. Meanwhile, I felt the casting director chose Lucas Barski only because of his brooding looks and nothing more. He isn’t as good as one expects from him. This too goes against the very aim of making the movie.
Coming to the pacing, that too is very slow in the whole movie. Things move at such a sluggish speed that even if you try to fast-forward, you will realize that you haven’t really lost out on much. And that is the worst thing/: a slow movie with a predictable plot. Hence, to conclude, I won't recommend You+Me – Against the World to anyone unless you are super bored and have nothing to watch.
