‘A Virtuous Business’ Netflix Series Review - Bold and Unconventional

"A Virtuous Business" starts with a bold and unconventional storyline that sets the stage for a compelling drama. Set in the 1990s the first episode introduces us to Han Jung-sook, a woman once crowned Miss Chili Lady, now a wife and mother, whose perfect life starts unraveling when her husband squanders their savings. Her struggles become clear when she can't afford to buy a new school bag for her son. This moment of frustration ignites her determination to provide a better future for her family, and in a surprising twist, she embarks on an unexpected business venture—selling adult toys and products after reading an advertisement to sell lingerie which will pay her well.

The show does a great job of presenting Jung-sook's inner conflict as she steps into a profession that is seen as taboo in the conservative town of Geumje. Seo Young-bok, her ally in this daring venture, is a mother of four children who share the same goal—improving her family’s situation. Their partnership brings a sense of camaraderie to the storyline, as both women grapple with the societal stigma attached to their new line of work.

The drama turns thrilling when Jung-sook, en route to making a private sale, forgets her bag of products on the bus. Enter Kim Do-hyun, a suave yet overqualified detective stationed in Geumje. His involvement adds another layer to the show, as he helps Jung-sook retrieve her bag. While Kim Do-hyun’s presence brings a sense of security, his character feels like he's harboring deeper layers yet to be explored, hinting at future developments between him and Jung-sook.

Just as Jung-sook begins navigating the complexities of her new business, a police complaint threatens her venture. A misunderstanding led to a report of a brothel being operated at Oh Guem Hee, where the adult products were being sold. The situation is cleared up, but it foreshadows the challenges these women will face as they try to succeed in a conservative and judgmental society.

The episode ends with an emotional punch—Jung-sook discovers her husband’s affair, a revelation that throws her life into further chaos. This cliffhanger sets the stage for what promises to be a compelling journey of self-discovery, survival, and empowerment. How will she confront her husband? One of the standout aspects of A Virtuous Business is undoubtedly its stellar cast, who bring depth and charisma to their roles, making the show all the more engaging. Kim So-yeon, in the role of Han Jung-sook, is a true show-stealer. Her portrayal of a woman torn between societal expectations and her fierce determination to give her son a better life is filled with nuance. She masterfully captures Jung-sook’s wide range of emotions—from frustration and vulnerability to moments of boldness and resolve.

Yeon Woo-jin shines as Kim Do-hyun, the dashing detective who becomes Jung-sook’s unlikely ally. He brings a charming yet mysterious quality to the character, balancing his role as the town’s sharpest investigator with an understated sense of personal intrigue. His chemistry with Kim So-yeon is electric, and though their relationship is just beginning to unfold, there's a palpable tension that promises exciting developments in future episodes. Kim Sung-young, who plays Seo Young-bok, the ever-smiling mother of four, brings warmth and light-heartedness to the show.

Kim Sung-ryung’s portrayal of Oh Guem-hee is another standout. As a sensible, educated, and well-mannered woman, she desires a change from the monotony of her life. Her character brings a more intellectual and philosophical perspective to the story, and Kim Sung-ryung’s graceful portrayal allows Oh Guem-hee’s inner conflict to simmer beneath her polished exterior. With its mix of humor, drama, and unexpected plot twists, the show challenges traditional norms, making for a fascinating watch.
