Apple TV ‘Last Seen’ Episode 4 Review - The Mystery of Maggie Deepens

With each passing episode, the stakes are getting higher. This time around, it is Donald Reid who has been caught for questioning. He is questioned about whether he was the one who picked up the girl who is the subject of the investigation two nights ago, and to everyone’s surprise, we see him provide no clear answer. As it is shown, he is not in support of Jenna and Henry keeping Maggie, as he feels she belongs to her real biological parents, Ian and Debbie. He is torn between protecting his brother and also withholding the truth. Henry emotionally manipulates him into defending them in front of the cops. Meanwhile, Ian is growing restless and is persistent about being there when the cops interview him. He chases him down, which ultimately leads to Ian meeting with an accident.  It is evident now that Jenna and Henry are hiding Sarah from the rest of the world. The cops have now even reached the house of Henry and Jenna. But the question is: will Sarah/Margret be there? On the other hand, Jenna is also keeping an eye on Ian. So it is all the case of everyone keeping an eye on each other. Ian now is convinced beyond doubt that he has found Maggie, but the only frustration we see is the fact that he isn’t able to prove himself right.

Most of episode 4 carries on with Ian’s search. We do see some progress from episode 3 with the questioning going on with Donald. But nothing significant comes out. The highlight of this episode has to be the character of Donald Ried as he tries to navigate between morality and family bonds. The struggle he has is real. It is whether he can understand Ian’s pain, but it is also tied to his own brother Henry. In such a case, what happens next is what is stored in episode 5.

I feel the makers don’t wish to rush with the plot. Hence, in episode 4, we just see the continuation of episode 3. Does it leave us with the question that I mentioned before: if Sarah/Maggie is alive, whose body is that we see? Is it yet another plot planted by Jenna and Henry to keep Maggie away from Ian? Because at this point, it is no surprise that Sarah is alive.

The pacing of episode 4 is fast. Things happen one after the other right from the time Ian chases Donald down to the final hospital scene. Everything happens in just a matter of time. It could also be that we are so intrigued by the plot that we don’t understand how fast the time flies.

Now all the stakes are on episode 5. The investigation is getting tighter and tighter with each passing episode. Every character shown has some sort of purpose in the episode they feature in and is a major connection to the whole plot at large. In episode 5, we can expect a lot more from Donald. Maybe he confesses to Ian? Maybe not. And for that we have to wait. But one thing is for sure: the case has twists and turns that are unpredictable, and hence that’s the best part about watching “Last Seen.”
