So, we now finally know what those MDR numbers mean. They are Gemma's tempers - the building blocks of her mind. "Every file you've completed is a new consciousness for her. A new innie," explains Harmony. Mark has completed 24 files, and the Lumon bosses are eagerly waiting for the completion of the Cold Harbor file. After Cold Harbor, Gemma will be killed. Mark's innie, too, won't get a happy ending. The best thing the innie can do is rescue Gemma from the Lumon building. This would crash the whole company, but it would also obliterate all the innies. Meaning: The innie Mark would lose Helly. This confusion gives rise to an amusing scene where the outie Mark, through a video camera, convinces his innie to help him. The rescue mission is a doozy, involving Mark's transition from innie to outie to innie to outie. Terrific. Still, when Harmony informs Mark about the numbers and other things, you can't help but notice that the latter has not asked a crucial question - Why me? Why did Lumon only choose Mark and Gemma for their experiment? If the innie Mark was creating Gemma's new innies, what were his colleagues doing? What do the numbers on their computer screens mean? Severance hasn't yet laid out all its cards on the table, and it conceals its thinness with more weird things.

Take the band performance, for instance. The Choreography and Merriment team get so absorbed in their performance that they fail to read the room - they don't see what's happening in their surroundings. Helly locks Milchik in the bathroom, but the band continues dancing. Helly asks the band members to help her, but they ignore her plea and continue performing. How dedicated are these employees! They only break their routine when Milchik orders them to stop performing. These robots, however, become sentient beings when Helly gives a speech whose title could be "Don't Listen to Milchik." Yes, the speech is as simplistic as this heading, but this is the last episode, and some things must happen quickly. So be ready for that rousing scene where Dylan and the band members stare at the severed floor manager, and the former says, "Fuck you, Mr. Milchik."

The rescue mission itself doesn't feel as tense or exciting as one hoped it would be. Mark faces an obstacle in the form of a brawny Mr. Drummond. He should have raised the stakes or at least provided the illusion that this mission wouldn't be child's play. However, since we see him forcing Lorne to participate in a goat sacrifice ritual, we merely wait for her to save Mark from Drummond. There might not be much suspense or tension on the screen, but there is humor all right in the form of a character's scream and a slightly awkward kiss (the scene where Milchik quickly runs from a room after handing over a paper to Dylan reminds you of that scene from The Grand Budapest Hotel where Gustave suddenly starts running away from the authorities). Ultimately, the innie Mark sends Gemma outside and decides to stay inside the building. He chooses Helly. The episode ends with a freeze-frame, inviting us to think about the future of these two innies. What's next? Will the severed employees protest against their bosses? Will they start a revolution inside the company? Well, Ben Stiller has assured us we won't have to wait two or three years for Season 3. I don't care. Stiller can take as much time as he wants. I just want the next season to have a bit more narrative clarity.

Final Score - [6/10]
