Comedy Royale is stated as the Battlefield of Comedians where five teams are here to compete against each other and bag a Netflix Original show. I wouldn’t recommend this drama to anyone who wants a good laugh. There were horrible performances and it was awful. The way the participants and the host introduced them in the beginning hinted at a good show, however, after one or two performances passed, you know that this was just a waste of time.

In the beginning, the audience is told how the participants are the best in Korean comedy, and by looking at their performances, I have my doubts. Are the numbers they’re shown to gain on social media or YouTube organic? Either the participants are really bad comedians and had a stroke of good luck or the show didn’t allow them a good amount of time to deliver. Whatever the reason maybe, the hype created didn’t match with the energy and content of the shown performances.

While many participants were on the stage to perform, I didn’t see the enthusiasm. The reality show began with five teams which meant that there were twenty people. In many performances, the audience will be able to notice the artist's retreat. The reason behind that varied like they weren’t able to improvise or got nervous.

In the roasting round, there was a participant whose performance was only confessing his love to the female participants. How he confessed his love was vague and cheap, and if the comedy in his performance had to be quantified, it was negative.

As the show was edited, it still had poor-quality content. Stating that the winner would get a chance to star in a Netflix Original, I don’t think any participant deserved that. In all, this is not something you should watch if you’re looking for a good laugh.

When the concept of the Joker card was introduced, it brought suspense into the show as the masters can use it when they feel like the team underperformed. However, after I continued with the show, I came across a highly underutilized and underperformed concept.

Comedy Royale is a porridge with stale ingredients which is best left unconsumed. The makers of this reality show weren’t able to bring up good teams and they were disastrous. The person who came up with the idea of Comedy Royale must think twice before making any decision and reflect by watching the show on his/her own.

After the second episode, I was baffled because so much was being done in the name of comedy like the opening act in the first scene or the monkey act. The whole concept of CEO or Master also had no importance. The only power they held was on their team, and other than that, they were just like sitting puppets. Maybe the Korean audience might be able to relate more, but I felt that the show was bad due to the dubbing. Nonetheless, it still didn’t work for me as it would for the rest of the international audience.

Final Score – [2/10]
