Set in the backdrop of Barcelona in a hyper-connected world, Day One is a series that blends crime investigation along with some modern technology, which in result gives us an engaging suspense plot. The plot kicks off with a murder that takes place before the launch of a highly publicized event by a big company. At first glance, authorities treat it as a case of homicide. However, deeper investigations reveal that it is in fact a complex web of corporate secrets and hidden agendas. Somewhere in between, we also understand that the technology that was about to be laughed at by the tech giant is indeed more dangerous than it appears to be. As detectives follow in, it becomes clear that the murder web and the technology are deeply related to each other, which the company is trying to hide. Not only that, if launched, this technology can also have the data of many users, something that we also see in real life. Ulises Albet becomes the prime suspect since he was a former tech prodigy who has now turned into an anti-tech activist. Is he really behind the murder or just a scapegoat?
Okay, so while the plot is good, the execution is a bit confusing. And when I say confusing, I mean it. It goes on and on, and there is nothing that one can do about it. There are too many elements involved in it, which becomes a bit tricky and slightly tiring to decode as we move ahead with the plot. For example, I do understand that murder plots aren’t that simple like romcoms are when it comes to understanding. And this is where the role of the makers comes in to make the script slightly less complicated for us to comprehend. Now, here we have a mega technology that is going to erupt, a murder that has taken place, and a murder suspect who, by the way, also has his own back story. These elements are crucial for us to understand what exactly is going on. But where it becomes difficult is that the execution ends up overlapping these things again and again. This is what the main issue is with Day One. Also, they used lockdown as well. I feel that whatever concerns we have been facing so far as a world, the makers added all of that to make the plot thrilling.
Other than that, the pacing is uneven, which means that in some places it is fast, and in others it is slow. That sluggish sort of behavior is what makes the show annoying to watch. Murder mysteries are supposed to be intriguing. But Day one was anything but that. The technology part is something that was a wasted potential. While the makers did connect it well with the main part, I feel some more thrill could have also been added by way of that. However, we must appreciate the data privacy concerns that they have raised. It was for sure a fresh breath of air in a world of repetitive plots. That was one aspect that makes Day One stand out amongst the many murder mysteries that come our way.
So all in all, Day one has issues which can't be denied. But that doesn’t mean that it is not worth watching. Yes, some of us might not really want to watch it again, but some of us might even like it for whatever elements have been added so far.
Final Score- [6/10]
