Hayasaka Akito is a young and handsome boy who is a student, fate leads him to encounter the young and beautiful Deguchi Natsuki. Fate draws them closer in the name of art, but their bond witnesses a traumatic ending. Japanese movies are always a go-to place for me when I want to cry buckets. Well, their movies have basic and normal plots, but they still manage to make people cry buckets. Drawing Closer is a newly released Japanese movie on Netflix from which I expected the same.

It is directed by Miki Takahiro and written by Yoshida Tomoko. The movie is almost 2 hours long, and it was not boring for me even though it was quite slow. It can be a cliche type of movie for someone who is not into romantic and sad type genres, it can also be boring if someone doesn't like slow movies. But the movie can leave a huge impression on those who are into slow romantic movies and love to watch sad endings as well as movies full of sorrow.

I won't say it is as wow as other Japanese sad movies, but for me, it was very good even though it was quite slow in my opinion. What made the movie more beautiful is the art and painting that were shown in the movie which made the leads come closer to one another. The title and the plot truly complement each other as the main leads draw closer due to their common interest which are art and painting. It was truly aesthetic and the cinematography was straight out of a painting. The way the title “Drawing Closer '' was depicted in the movie by showing drawings making the leads draw closer to one another, was incredibly beautiful.

It is a perfect blend of art, romance, friendship, life, happiness, and tears. The story focuses on Hayasaka Akito who finds that he is terminally ill. Soon he decides to end his life by jumping off a hospital’s building, where he meets Deguchi Natsuki. She is in a hospital uniform and busy painting something. Hayasaka Akito makes the first move and asks her about the color pastels she is using and what she is drawing. Natsuki then replies to him saying that she is drawing heaven which will soon be her home, and she mentions that she isn't kidding about this part.

Akito finds her very fascinating as she is not scared of mentioning her death, and she isn't afraid of it. Their slow conversation, common interest, and ill-fated lives make them closer to one another. But things start to get more traumatic when their illness gets extremely serious, Natsuki has only six months to live whereas Akito has one year to continue his life. It has the power to make an individual cry a lot even though it has a generic storyline. I enjoyed the movie a lot, and I was deeply traumatized after watching it. You can give it a try if you love sad movies.
