Dying to be Famous is about London, Zara, and their mother. For those who are wondering that the mother had just one daughter then, Zara is the alternate personality that lives in London and comes out when she feels threatened. London lives in a beautiful mansion with her mother and is a budding influencer. She wants to grab great collabs and be the top game. After going through a rough childhood, London wanted to make her name and her mother was relying on her to earn money. Her trust fund is going to run out on her twenty-fifth birthday so there's not much time and money left to support the mother-daughter's lavish lifestyle. Steps had to be taken to secure a good future and the same turned into a set of drastic measures. London's alternative personality Zara takes the spotlight and commits four murders. She even records her having sex with the social media manager. So, when things got rough London couldn't take advantage of these events and eventually suffered the consequences of actions which were done to bring her peace.
This film wasn't about the impact of social media. I think that it was more about dissociative personality, so why was this issue kept in the backseat and the focus was kept on social media is not understandable. They both hold equal weightage and if this had been shown in the same manner, the outcome would have been better. London quickly shifted personalities. While speaking one line she's London and the next words that come out are from Zara. Her mother knew about this problem and still didn't keep an eye on her daughter. She knew that Zara was back and didn't take any action. This part wasn't understandable and well, the mother paid by getting killed. One good thing that happened was she warned the next victims.
The title- Dying to be Famous also looks wrong because it should have been Killing to be Famous and London didn't exactly benefit from the killings. She became famous by releasing a sex tape, car getting towed, and pretending to be hit by the killer. The actress playing the role of London did a half-baked job and the same goes for the writers as well. The audience will see potential here as the story could have been great yet it didn't go well due to the many deviations. Gavin and Erica were good people who got involved and then made money from it. The whole concept of social media is displayed appropriately and the so-called good influencer life and the toll it takes on one's mental health is true. So, be careful before indulging in anything be it social media or lovers. The time duration of the film is approximately 85 minutes and with this time frame, they've done an average job. In all, the movie shifted its dynamics often and the dissociative personality deserved better scenes. They've shown the origins, the end of Zara but what about what goes behind it?
Final Score – [4/10]
