At first glance, I Love You Just a Little Bit seems like a conventional love story, but it quickly unfolds into an intricate exploration of desire, unfulfilled longing, and the consequences of past love lingering into the present. The Japanese drama follows Mitsu, a woman who seemingly has it all—a devoted husband, a stable life, and a loving home—yet remains haunted by the ghost of her first love. The series delicately navigates themes of obsession, temptation, and the fine line between nostalgia and self-destruction.
Mitsu's upbringing was anything but conventional. Raised by a mother who was fixated on finding “the one,” she witnessed a parade of men entering their lives, none of whom lasted long. Her mother never saw any man as worthy enough to settle down with, which left Mitsu without knowledge of her father’s identity. Her very existence resulted from her mother’s curiosity about motherhood rather than a product of love. This fragmented childhood inevitably shaped Mitsu’s own views on relationships, love, and commitment.
During her high school years, Mitsu fell for Arishima, a popular, athletic, and undeniably charming boy played by Nobuyuki Suzuki. Despite their strong connection, their romance never truly materialized. A moment of hesitation on Mitsu’s part led to embarrassment for Arishima, and shortly after, he transferred to another school, leaving her with unresolved feelings. Despite the passage of time, Mitsu never fully let go of him.
Years later, Mitsu finds stability and security with Ryota Watanabe, a dependable and caring man who dotes on her. Ryota, a dedicated interior designer, provides Mitsu with a comfortable life, gourmet meals, and unwavering affection. To any outsider, she is living an ideal married life. However, no amount of love from Ryota can erase Arishima's lingering thoughts from her mind.
Fate intervenes when Mitsu unexpectedly crosses paths with Arishima again. All the years of longing and fantasizing come rushing back, eclipsing her current reality. Despite Arishima now being married to Reika, who is pregnant with their child, Mitsu and Arishima plunge into a passionate affair. Their relationship is fueled by lust, nostalgia, and a reckless disregard for their respective spouses.
While the story is centered around Mitsu’s journey, Naka Riisa, who plays Reika, delivers a standout performance. Her portrayal of a woman grappling with heartbreak yet maintaining grace and dignity elevates the entire series. She commands every scene she is in, making Reika a deeply compelling character. Her performance was so impactful that it reportedly led to her casting in Holiday Love, another drama centered around infidelity but with even more emotional depth.
I Love You Just a Little Bit is not just a story about infidelity—it is an exploration of the human condition, our inability to let go of past emotions, and the often misguided belief that rekindling old flames will bring happiness. The drama does an excellent job of portraying the emotional turmoil that follows impulsive decisions and showcases how different people cope with betrayal in their own way. Whether you sympathize with Mitsu or find her selfish, the series is bound to leave a lasting impression.
