Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has given an important update on the anticipated second season of Loki. In the Loki season 1 finale, Disney surprised the fans by announcing a second season that will continue the misadventures of the titular character played by Tom Hiddleston.
The finale, however, left fans wondering where the second season would fit into the MCU timeline. Unlike the other TV spin-off shows, Loki introduced the existence of multiverse and one of MCU's most sharp villains in “Kang the Conqueror.”
According to Feige, the series will soon begin the search for a director after Kate Herron confirmed that she won't be returning for the second season. “It is underway. We’re developing it as we speak. The hope is that much of the same team will return. Kate is going on to bigger and better things, so the director search will begin shortly,” said Feige in an interview with Collider.
On the production side, Feige says, he is not sure when he will be able to start production work, but it might be between next year and the year after (2022 & 2023), which means, filming may not begin before 2023 and if we go by this timeline and include all the pre-prod and post-prod work, it is likely to be ready by the end of 2023. So, the latest Loki season 2 can be expected to arrive will be by the end of 2023 or at the beginning of 2024.
Earlier, when we wrote an article regarding the impact of Kang's arrival in MCU, we analyzed that Loki season 2 might kick-off Phase 5 of the MCU, which is likely to begin by the end of 2023 or 2024's beginning. Fantastic four is the last movie in Phase 4 and currently, it doesn't have any release date yet. Before this, we will see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, which will arrive on May 5, 2023.
Captain America 4 has been confirmed by Marvel Studios and it can be part of Phase 5. It is not yet confirmed if the film will begin Phase 5 or it will arrive in the latter part. So, it is safe to assume that Loki season 2 might officially (as a TV Series) kick-off Phase 5, or in the least likely scenario, it will close Phase 4.
Seeing the expected timeline for Loki season 2, Ant-Man 3 is likely where we will see more of Kang than any film or series coming before it. "Spiderman: No Way Home" and "Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness" are also part of the multiverse story, and Loki is already set to appear in the latter. It will be even more interesting to see if Owen Wilson's character Mobius is going to make an appearance before the second season or not. Will “Kang the Conqueror” and TVA will again be the central focus for the second season. I guess we have to wait a couple of years to find out, but exciting times are ahead.
