In episode 5 of "Expats," we witness the characters bonding, confronting one another, and ultimately making decisions based on their newfound realizations. Here's what unfolds: Hillary discovers that her husband, David, is having an affair with a woman half his age, prompting her to file for divorce. Despite her friend's advice against joining the ranks of "expats who are divorced," Hillary prioritizes her own peace of mind. Additionally, this episode provides a detailed look into the lives of the domestic workers employed by the expats, highlighting the interpersonal dynamics within these families and the impact on the workers' lives.

Clarke again confronts Margaret, urging her to consider relocating to the United States. Despite her initial vehement refusal, she eventually agrees, albeit reluctantly. Clarke expresses concern that Margaret's intense focus on finding Guss is causing her to neglect their other two children. Throughout the episode, Clarke's plight ignites sympathy – he is a father grappling with the loss of a son while striving to prioritize the well-being of their remaining children. As a husband, he understands the implications of uprooting their lives for a fresh start in a new country and the impact it will have on their efforts to locate Guss. Ultimately, he is compelled to make this difficult decision for the sake of their family.

In a tense confrontation, Margaret reveals to Essie that her decision to hire Mercy on the night of Guss's disappearance stemmed from her own insecurities about the strong bond Essie and her children shared with the beloved nanny. She confesses feeling like she was drifting apart from her children as a mother. Margaret acknowledges her mistake in this belief and recognizes the importance of being present for her children. This episode also portrays Margaret coming to the realization that in her fervent search for Guss, she had unintentionally neglected her own two children. Meanwhile, there are hints of a romantic development between Mercy and Charly, deepening their bond further.

Episode 5 of "Expats" provides us with a new narrative- a narrative from the point of view of those people who help these family function smoothly- the domestic help. This was a much-needed narrative. We see deep-hearted conversations between Puri and Essie. They witness everything happening in the family and are also an extension of the family.

This episode beautifully captures the tapestry of Hong Kong during rain. It also gives us a glimpse of the political movement that took place in 2014. The actors shine in their respective roles, making the miniseries an emotionally intense viewing experience. With its diverse range of characters and myriad emotions, the show illuminates the meaning of life. We hope to find answers to our questions in the next episode.

Final Score - [7/10]
