This has to be one of the most haunting stories that you will be watching. Revisiting the event of the 2012 Costa Concordia shipwreck, the documentary tells us the happenings with the help of never-before-seen footage, survivor interviews, and emergency recordings. The makers could have made this into some sort of sensational story, given the media attention it attracted. Yet, instead of following the path taken by many before, they decide to show us through real storytelling with evidence how human error and failed leadership can lead to some of the biggest disasters the world has ever seen.

Every interview, distress call, and archived footage makes you understand the pain of the survivors from the incident. For those of you who don't know, here is what happened: on 13th January 2012, the seven-year-old vessel Costa Concordia was on a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea. The cruise ship deviated from the planned route at Isola del Giglio in Italy and struck a rock formation on the sea floor. Due to this, the ship partially sank, with the Captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, leaving the ship early. Onboard the cruise were 300 passengers, out of whom 32 died. Though rescue efforts were made, clearly this was an incident that could have been well avoided had the Captain of the ship acted wisely. When you watch Shipwrecked: Nightmare at the Sea, you feel angry towards the captain, especially when you watch the survivor testimonies. It is such a heartbreaking watch. The fact that so many people lost their lives due to this fills you with nothing but anger.

Coming to how the documentary is made. As already mentioned before, the storytelling and the narration of incidents that led to this have been well explained. The makers initially start with creating a cruise-type environment for even us, the audience. They show us how parties are organized there, and people are all up for a good time, not knowing what is in store for them. Slowly, that tension is built when one after the other, events start to unfold before us. We are shown the confusion that the passengers had, initially not realizing what was happening, to finally understanding the mess they had landed themselves in. The main aim of the documentary is to make us understand what the passengers underwent, and after watching this, it is safe to say that indeed the makers succeeded at this.

Another plus point is that the documentary is. Right from start to end, it shows us everything. I won't say that any aspect has been left out because, truly, there hasn't been any as such. The pacing is even. Nowhere does the plot rush. In fact, it does slow down at crucial points for us to pause, grasp, and process what exactly happened and the result it had on people. What surprised me the most is that even after so many years, when the survivors opened up, their emotions and feelings felt as real as if the incident had taken place just yesterday. But yes, I need to warn my readers. If you have been someone who struggles or gets uncomfortable while watching clips or stories related to accidents, I would highly advise you against Shipwrecked: Nightmare at the Sea for your own good. If you are someone who wishes to know more and enjoys watching documentaries in general, then yes, this is indeed a great watch.
