“Temurun” is a gripping supernatural drama centered on two siblings, Dewi and Sena, whose lives are upended by a tragic family loss. The death of their mother not only brings them back into contact with their estranged father and paternal grandmother but also unearths a dark family legacy that neither of them could have foreseen. At the heart of this legacy is Dewi, whose grief over her mother's death opens the door for an ominous force lurking in the shadows.
The film sets the stage with a dysfunctional family dynamic, where Dewi and Sena are already grappling with the weight of their mother’s prolonged illness. Struggling to make ends meet, their financial troubles only add to the emotional strain, especially for Dewi, who shared an exceptionally close bond with her mother. This bond, while beautiful, becomes her downfall, as Dewi is unable to process the overwhelming grief that consumes her after her mother’s passing. Her sorrow creates an opening for evil forces to exploit her vulnerability, slowly pulling her into their dark plans.
What makes “Temurun” stand out is its exploration of grief and how it can distort a person’s reality. Dewi’s character, in particular, is a poignant portrayal of someone battling immense sadness while trying to shoulder the blame for her family’s unraveling. As the film progresses, we see Dewi's psychological state deteriorate, which catalyzes the supernatural elements to take hold. The sinister presence lurking around her begins to manipulate not only her mind but also her family, who either blame her or try to protect her from the inevitable doom.
The tension between the siblings, especially with Sena, adds another layer to the story. Sena, though grieving, is more pragmatic and becomes the anchor of the family. The constant blame games and accusations further isolate Dewi, making her more susceptible to the evil that seeks to engulf her.
The movie’s pacing is deliberate, with the slow build-up of dread as Dewi’s life spirals out of control. The film masterfully intertwines family drama with the supernatural, creating a compelling narrative that explores how grief can make someone vulnerable to forces beyond their control. Dewi’s journey of sorrow, guilt, and eventual confrontation with the dark legacy is both haunting and tragic, making “Temurun” a memorable watch.
As the film unfolds, it's easy to predict where the plot but the ending still manages to catch you off guard. This element of surprise left me both puzzled and intrigued. While the storyline was straightforward and captivating, it was the unexpected conclusion that set it apart from typical horror films, where the main character often finds a way to escape.
Yasamen Jasem delivers a standout performance as Dewi, skillfully capturing the depth of her character's emotions. She fully embodies Dewi’s overwhelming sense of grief and yearning for her mother, whom she was powerless to save. Jasem’s portrayal brings authenticity to the role, conveying the complex layers of sorrow, guilt, and helplessness that drive Dewi’s actions throughout the film. Every glance, hesitation, and breakdown reflects her internal struggle, making Dewi's emotional journey feel raw and relatable. Bryan Domani too shines as Sena showcasing the emotional layer in the character well. Overall the movie is a one-time watch with family drama and a bit of thrill at its peak.
