The Åre Murders introduces us to an atmospheric and gripping Nordic noir experience with Hidden in Snow. At the center of the story is Detective Hanna Ahlander, portrayed by Carla Sehn. Seeking an escape from personal and professional turmoil, Hanna arrives in the picturesque ski town of Åre. Having recently ended a relationship and facing possible suspension from the Stockholm police force, she hopes to find solace in the quiet, snow-covered landscape. However, peace eludes her when a local teenage girl suddenly vanishes. Despite being an outsider, Hanna is compelled to investigate. She soon joins forces with Daniel Lindskog, the lead detective assigned to the case. What begins as a missing persons case quickly escalates into a far more sinister murder mystery.

One of the most captivating elements of The Åre Murders is its meticulous and methodical approach to storytelling. The narrative unfolds with precision, offering just the right amount of information at every twist and turn, ensuring that viewers remain fully immersed in the mystery. Rather than overwhelming the audience with excessive details, the series carefully balances suspense and revelation, allowing the tension to build organically. This engaging structure invites viewers to piece together clues alongside the characters, heightening the overall intrigue. Adding to the series' allure is its talented ensemble cast, with standout performances from Moa Gammel, Olle Sarri, and Frida Argento. Their compelling portrayals bring depth to the story, making each revelation all the more impactful.

Initially, Hanna’s involvement in the case is met with doubts, particularly from Daniel. However, her tenacity and keen investigative instincts quickly prove invaluable. As the bond between the two detectives develops, so does the complexity of the case. The first mystery reaches a gripping resolution within the first three episodes, but the series does not end there.

Just as the first mystery concludes, The Åre Murders pivots to an even more intricate case. A frozen corpse is discovered, leading Hanna to extend her stay in Åre and resume her work alongside Daniel. Amelia Holm’s performance stands out as particularly gripping, as she plays a character burdened with secrets, making the eventual revelation of the truth both devastating and unforgettable.

While the series succeeds in crafting suspenseful mysteries, it falters slightly in its depiction of the relationship between Hanna and Daniel. The hints of a potential romance between them feel out of place, given that Daniel is married and adjusting to life as a new father. So as a logical person, you will think how can this man fall for someone else? And then you may think why these two are creating an almost romantic relationship? Their growing closeness occasionally feels unnecessary, raising moral concerns that slightly detract from the narrative. Although this dynamic may have been more nuanced in the original books, its on-screen portrayal lacks the same level of depth and justification.

Despite this minor flaw, The Åre Murders remains a standout entry in the Nordic noir genre. With its tense storytelling, compelling performances by the actors, and unexpected plot twists, the series delivers an immersive and thrilling viewing experience. While some character dynamics could have been handled better, the expertly woven mysteries ensure that audiences will remain captivated until the very last scene.
