While the plot may not have left a lasting mark in my mind, what did leave was Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s performance in “The Bluff”. The plot revolves around Ercell Bodden, also known as “Bloody Mary,” who used to be a notorious pirate but has now given up that life. Presently, she lives on the island of Cayman Brac with her family. However, as we all know, people who engage in professions of spying, secret services, as well as pirates, are hardly ever able to leave their old life behind. And so following Ercell Bodden is her former captain, Conor, who is driven by the feeling of vengeance and a claim to get back all the stolen riches from Ercell Bodden. Thus, her present quiet life goes for a six, and now the island has become a battleground for survival where the past resurfaces, and survival becomes important.
The visuals of the film are amazing. For example, the fighting scenes between the cast are worth watching. What has also amazed me is how Chopra Jonas has become so comfortable with action scenes. There is a lot of grace and power in the way she does, what she does. Other than that, even Karl Urban amazes with his skills, all in all, in the movie. These two make a powerful duo that saves the ill-written script and prevents the movie from getting into shambles.
Coming to where the movie falters, it is the script. The plot becomes a bit confusing mid-way through the movie. You will have many questions raised, but very few answered. Another thing is how easily and badly the script is predictable. There have been so many movies and TV shows that have been created on the same plot with changed professions. So all in all, as such, you get nothing new, and you will be left heavily disappointed. Everything else goes well, but what will you do with a good script when, in reality, the main core of the film is lacking?
Thankfully, as I mentioned before, it is the acting and skills of the cast that save us from a slow death while watching the movie. I wish the writers paid more heed to the writing part, as even the pacing is slow, which adds to the annoyance. The character development also feels halfhearted, as even though we are shown the past of Ercell Bodden, something about it doesn’t feel very satisfying at all. A better narration of her story and some more layers would have done the job, but unfortunately, even that doesn’t happen. One doesn’t mind watching repeated plots if executed well, but here I watched it for Chopra Jonas and Urban.
I would suggest that you watch this movie only if you are a fan of Chopra Jonas. Otherwise, the film can become a big pain to watch. It feels never-ending and clumsy in its execution.
Final Score- [5/10]
