The Freelancer is about a 21-year-old girl trapped by her in-laws in the territory of ISIS. little did her parents know about the family of the lover and what this marriage would do. After Aaliyah fell in love with Mohsin, her parents agreed upon their marriage.  She was promised a honeymoon, but the plans changed and she landed in Istanbul. Soon, she is taken to the territory of ISIS as a recruit. The girl was tricked into being a part of a terrorist organization.

As she went off the radar after flying for her honeymoon, her father tried his best to locate her. When he saw that nothing was going to happen, he committed suicide in front of the American Consulate. Avinash is Inaayat’s (Aaliyah’s dad) friend and when he comes to know about the things that happened to Aaliyah, here begins the journey of Avinash extracting Aaliyah.

I’m impressed by Anupam Kher’s acting. His character is the best one in this series as it holds many cards. The old man knows his way around the politics and intelligence agencies. As we say everything has a price, the value of his knowledge can’t be estimated.

There’s a scene in which his character, Dr. Khan narrates the story about who is Avinash. The way Anupam Kher has aced that scene is beyond words. I’m all praises for Kher for his performance in The Freelancer.

After watching Mohit Raina in Army uniform in URI: The Surgical Strike, I had next to little doubts about him fitting in the show. At the beginning of the series, he did seem like a misfit which wasn’t expected. Either it was his body or his body language that made me take the time to accept him in the role of Avinash.

After an episode or two, it didn’t seem like a problem. The scenes in which he’s seen jogging or doing pushups make one question his physical strength to carry out the operation he has set his eyes on. Nonetheless, it is the brain that matters the most in this scenario.

The plot of The Freelancer is something that we have seen before in many series. A girl being trapped in the hub of ISIS and her dear uncle planning the extraction is not new for Indian cinema fans. In some of the other series, the same plot gets repeated. Maybe it is high time that the writers come up with something else instead of obsessing over ISIS. Yes, the threat exists in real life and we can not deny that. The fact that many innocent people are held captive and are being exploited also can not be denied. The point here is creativity.

Indian series and film writers have been for a very long time cashing out on the same subject. So it seems like a good time for a new concept to be introduced in this creative world. Almost every other series like The Freelancer holds the same core plot.

What makes The Freelancer different from others in the same genre is a freelancer working to extract a dear one. All the intelligence companies coming together and the best men putting efforts into a single case is what makes this series a bit different. Other than that, it is the same tale.

The scene in which a mishap occurs in Avinash’s family after he loses his job is heartbreaking. The message here is that don’t get too much drowned in your sadness that you forget to cherish the things around you.

Every time Aaliyah is seen communicating with her mother or Avinash, it makes your heart beat faster. The reason behind this is that we never know what’ll happen with this poor soul once her cover is blown. To sum up, The Freelancer is a good series, and you won’t regret investing your time in this one. A lot was expected from Mahit Raina and he didn’t deliver the same.

Final Score – [6.5/10]
