‘(Un)lucky Sisters’ Netflix Movie Review - An Unexplained Plot

Angela and Jessica share a father but have led disparate lives. Angela works as an aide to a kindergarten teacher but is on the verge of being fired due to her lack of enthusiasm for the job. She lives with her boyfriend at his grandmother's house, but their relationship is strained. Her boyfriend desperately wants to start a family, but Angela is reluctant and feels trapped by the idea of motherhood.

Jessica, on the other hand, works at a fast-food restaurant and is struggling to make ends meet. She dreams of getting out of her dead-end job and finding a way to improve her life, but opportunity always seems out of reach.

The sisters' paths cross again when their estranged father suddenly dies. Though they haven't seen him in years, they are forced to come together for the funeral. Angela resents Jessica for her carefree attitude and refusal to acknowledge the emotional weight of their father's death. Jessica, in turn, sees Angela's bitterness as a waste of energy and agrees to be cordial, though she’s only there for one reason: money.

Their father had recently been involved in a corruption scandal, and all of his assets, including his apartment, were frozen during an investigation. While Angela mourns the man she once knew, still holding onto a shred of hope for his redemption, Jessica is solely focused on what she might inherit. The two decide to stay in their father's apartment for a while, unsure of what their next steps should be.

Then, amidst their stay, they stumble upon a hidden stash of cash, tucked away in the walls of the apartment. The money is a small fortune, far more than either of them had ever seen. But the question looms large—who does it belong to? Was it their father’s ill-gotten gains from the corruption scandal? Or was it someone else's money hidden there for safekeeping?

Tensions mount as Angela and Jessica are torn between their moral compasses and the allure of the newfound wealth. Angela, conflicted by her sense of right and wrong, struggles with the idea of using the money, while Jessica sees it as a chance to escape her dead-end life and start anew. Their relationship, already fraught with resentment and misunderstandings, is put to the test as they must decide whether to keep the money, return it, or dig deeper into their father’s shady dealings.

As secrets about their father’s past come to light, the sisters find themselves pulled deeper into a web of corruption, lies, and betrayal. They must confront not only the legacy of their father but also their own complicated relationship with each other. What will they do with the money? And, more importantly, can they finally come to terms with who they are and the fractured bond that ties them together?

The movie unfolds at a sluggish pace, with scenes lingering longer than necessary, leaving the audience confused and disconnected. The central issue surrounding the money is clouded in ambiguity, making it difficult for viewers to grasp the full scope of the plot. Key details are either glossed over or buried beneath slow, drawn-out sequences that fail to build momentum. As a result, the film struggles to establish a clear direction, and the significance of the money—whether it’s tied to corruption, greed, or something deeper—remains frustratingly unclear. Overall you can skip the movie.
