The title of this show caught my attention, which in turn propelled me to watch. Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? is an eight-episode Japanese drama that blends humor, personal struggles, and questions about fame and identity. The plot revolves around Gen Takasegawa, a successful actor who has spent years trying to build his reputation in Japan. His career takes an unexpected turn when he travels to London and performs King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe. The production turns out to be an important opportunity for Gen to demonstrate his talent beyond his home country and establish himself internationally.
However, his professional achievements do not protect him from a devastating reality when he returns to Japan. After spending nearly two years away, he discovers that his former recognition as a star has disappeared. People who once knew him, including his family and colleagues, fail to recognise him. This forces Gen Takasegawa to confront a world in which his previous accomplishments and celebrity status no longer exist.
For someone like him who built much of his identity around acting, this sudden loss of recognition is more than a setback for him both personally and professionally. This also means that he must get back to building his relationships and career again at home. Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? It is a kind of plot that deals with a different kind of loss. It is built on the saying “it takes years to build a reputation and seconds to lose it”. Here we have a man who has to start everything from scratch because he wants to get international fame. And that is what the plot is all about.
There are both good and bad things about Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? Starting with the good: the makers and the writers teach us an important lesson: it is never too late to start again if what you lost truly holds value to you. The entire character of Gen Takasegawa is well written. He is an ambitious man who is unafraid to achieve his dreams, be it to get international fame or start again in his home country. Right from the start to the very end of the show, we are shown the development and the lessons he learns along the way, which make him central to the role in hand.
Now coming to the bad of Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? The plot is sometimes a bit confusing to watch and understand. It takes a while to get a hold of what the plot writers are trying to tell. Another issue is that after a point, one will get tired of watching Gen’s life. The struggles stop feeling inspired and start feeling repetitive. Something or the other keeps going wrong in his life, and for how long would you want to watch it? The biggest issue is that the plot is not fully relatable. When you compare it with reality, you will notice that for those who achieve international fame, they don’t get easily forgotten in their home country. The fame gets doubled. In Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? That doesn’t happen. It is the opposite.
However, even with all this, the cast does a great job. Koji Yakusho as Gen Takasegawa is flawless in his role. He is convincing as the lead, and you will easily hop on a journey with him through the eight episodes. The rest of the supporting cast, such as Kento Kaku, Kenichi Matsuyama, Noriko Eguchi, Yumi Kawai, and Masatoshi Hamada, also support Koji Yakusho well.
So all in all, I would say this is a one-time watch. If you have the patience, then yes, watch. Else, just skip.
