In Final Destination Bloodlines, each burning, mutilated body is presented to us like a treat. The camera smacks its lips while the characters scream. People drop from the sky and get crushed by an elevator, an electric pole, or machines. These bloody, brutal sights are served for our delectation, and the audience does seem to have a very good time with the film. It's funny that a Final Destination film is running in the theaters alongside a Mission: Impossible film. Both movies consist of characters who put their lives in danger for the pleasure of the fans of the franchise. Many of these fans come out with a smile on their faces, which should tell you that the movie-going audience can be sadistic. If Tom Cruise defies death, the puppets of Final Destination become its victims. But what's outrageous about Bloodlines is that after using bodies as disposable meat for entertainment, it has the nerve to say that life is precious.
In the Final Destination movies, the villain is an invisible entity named Death. It's very mischievous because it likes to set up a chain reaction to kill its victims. A shard of glass injures somebody's feet, who then gets mangled by a lawn mower, which was turned on by a carelessly placed bottle. A coin falls from a purse, rolls down the stairs, and finds itself on a railway track. Of course, the incoming train derails. There are many more such chain reactions, which the audience immediately recognizes, prompting them to sit up straight in anticipation of the violence. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein have fun murdering their characters. They turn funerals into a gag. The opening set piece that takes us to the top floor of the Skyview Restaurant is not just charged with giddiness - it also provides emotional catharsis (the people around me screamed joyfully and clapped as soon as that naughty kid was crushed by a heavy object). The directors keep the "deadly sequences" light and fun - the giddiness is maintained for 110 minutes. They convert death into a joke and go nuts during the finale. It's a train wreck - not in a bad way.
I first entered the world of Final Destination as a kid, and it was quite a traumatic experience. Thanks to these movies, I developed a fear of roller coasters. But watching Bloodlines as an adult felt different. I could recognize how ridiculous the violence is and was able to laugh at Death. This invisible foe is extremely patient; he executes his plans with meticulous calculations. I think he's the real sadist - he can't take a life without first creating a spectacle. Death and Tom Cruise should make a film together. But allow me to be a party pooper for a moment because I want to ask: What's the deal with Iris's (Gabrielle Rose) house? For someone so intent on escaping Death's relentless pursuit, her surroundings are filled with sharp, fatal objects. I was surprised to see all those spiky, wooden fences - they look dangerous. Should we take this arrangement as a joke? I am not sure. William Bludworth (Tony Todd) mentions that he had provided Iris with medical care for many years. Did he also do grocery shopping for her? Living alone in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, what did Iris do for entertainment? Did she watch movies or read novels? Was she truly content living such a solitary existence? Was there ever a moment when she got bored and considered accepting Death's plan? Bloodlines faintly asks whether it's worth living safely, in isolation, in fear of death. Writers Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor, though, never embrace this weighty aspect. I guess, they don't want to be party poopers. They know what the fans desire; they reward them with a high body count. Bloodlines is already being hailed as "the best-reviewed film in the franchise." It's likely to do good business at the box office, too. This means this is not the final destination. There will be more sequels.
Final Score- [6/10]
