‘Meet Yourself’ Netflix Series Review - A Healing Journey Shown Beautifully

So, first things first, Meet Yourself is a lengthy drama consisting of 40 episodes. This means you should watch only if you can devote time to it. The plot revolves around Xu Hongdou, a successful hotel manager in Beijing whose life changes after the death of her closest friend. Overwhelmed by grief and burnout, she decides to leave her past, face city life, and travel to Yunmiao Village in Dali, Yunnan. What was supposed to be a journey of temporary escape from the hustle soon becomes a journey of emotional recovery.  At the village, she meets Xie Zhiyao, a former city professional who ended up abandoning corporate success in order to return home and develop tourism. How will her life turn out with all these changes?

The best thing about Meet Yourself is the simplicity of the plot. It isn’t very complicated, nor does it offer big twists and turns. Rather, the makers have managed to portray grief most sensitively. It is not like Xu Hongdou’s grief is sensationalized; rather, in a very slow and deliberate manner, the makers have put forth what it means to undergo such a phase in life. For a lot of people, the life of Xu Hongdou can indeed be relatable.

Other than that, there is a sharp contrast between city life and country life. That change, too, has been shown well right from the start to the very end. In fact, the city and the village form the core of the background theme. It is as if they are a character in themselves. Beijing represents exhaustion and pressure, a place that turns humans into machines. Conversely, Yunmiao Village is portrayed as calm and warm, as many villages usually are. These real-life themes also make Meet Yourself a great watch, as we can see the impact of these backgrounds on the lives of the characters in the show.

What also sets the show apart from many others is the character development it does. When the show begins and when the show ends, there is a big change in Xu Hongdou. There is a significant development in the person she becomes by the end of the show. Xie Zhiyao, on the other hand, also shows shades that make his character different from many others that we have seen in similar settings. In him, we see a different kind of passion and ambition. He embodies responsibility towards a community. The bond created between them is a great complement to the plot.

In addition to the main star cast, even the supporting characters add more depth to the overall plot. Everyone in Yunmiao village is dealing with some or the other kind of losses and on their road to healing. These characters must exist as they show Xu Hongdou and us that life is full of ups and downs and that they are not alone. Lastly, even the visuals of the show are stunning. The village is beautiful, and the change in the background of Xu Hongdou is important. So dear viewers, if you are someone who likes the themes of healing, Meet Yourself is a great watch for you.
