Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black has returned for Season 3 with its combination of crime, betrayal, ambition, family dysfunction, and twists that will leave you wanting more. Picking up from where Season 2 left off, we see Kimmie is now in a powerful position within the Bellarie empire post her marriage to Horace. However, her rise to power comes with new dangers as the Bellaries struggle to deal with the FBI investigation and the consequences that have followed them due to their involvement in criminal activities. Kimmie is now caught between Horace and Norman’s long-running feud. On the other hand, her complex relationship with Mallory develops into an uneasy alliance as these two work together to protect their interests. What was something that we already saw coming in the previous season was Jules turning into a big threat post her son’s death, Glen. Blaming Kimmie for what happened, Jules is now obsessed with revenge and ends up joining Gina only to reveal that he has his own ambitions and is slowly becoming a powerful figure in the criminal underworld.
With all of this, Beauty in Black Season 3 is mostly about the power struggles between everyone who is involved. Soon enough, everything becomes a battle of survival for Kimmie. The plot, though well written as a continuation of season 2, is somewhat repetitive and highly predictable. The twists are good, but apart from a few, we had seen most of them coming through. Even Kimmie's place in the estate and her growing role were something most of us had anticipated when season 2 ended. So while you might start watching Beauty in Black Season 3 in excitement, it is a matter of time before the excitement dies down. In some places, the storytelling feels too messy with so many elements involved in it. It is like too many themes spoiled the plot. The makers wanted to cover everything they could to make this a great and thrilling watch, and in reality ended up making something which was quite complicated. Let’s be honest, after a hard day, the last thing you wish to watch is a plot that boggles your mind to make you not want to watch it further. That is exactly the case here.
The pacing is highly uneven too. Some scenes are too slow while some run fast. But mostly all of them are very slow. It will make you question your decision to watch the show. Shows like these should have a medium range of pace for us to get a grasp of what is being shown to us. Here in Beauty in Black Season 3, that is not what takes place. The highly uneven pacing breaks your flow to watch. What I felt saddest about was the fact that the plot had scope. When the show first started, it looked promising. But I am not happy with where the makers have taken the plot. Better writing is what was needed for Beauty in Black Season 3.
Final Score- [4/10]
