Netflix has announced the release date with a teaser trailer for the post-apocalyptic series “Sweet Tooth.” Based on characters created for DC Vertigo by Jeff Lemire, the series will premiere on June 4 on Netflix.

The series is based in a post-apocalyptic world ten years ago, when “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them. After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery) unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). Together they set out on an extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers— about Gus' origins, Jepperd's past, and the true meaning of home. But their story is full of unexpected allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns the lush, dangerous world outside the forest is more complex than he ever could have imagined.

The cast of the series includes Christian Convery (Beautiful Boy, Tiger Rising, Playing With Fire), Nonso Anozie (The Laundromat, Zoo, Game of Thrones), Adeel Akhtar (Les Misérables [TV series], Victoria & Abdul, The Big Sick) and Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth, Saturday Night Live), Aliza Vellani, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez, Neil Sandilands, with James Brolin (Life in Pieces, Amityville Horror, Westworld) as the voice of the narrator.

"Very excited to share the first teaser for @sweettooth. A post-apocalyptic fairytale produced by me, my missus Susan & a team of very talented people. Based on the beloved DC comic," said Robert Downey Jr. while revealing the teaser.

The series has eight, one-hour episodes. The project was previously handed a pilot order by Hulu in 2018 but the project did not go forward there.

Mickle and Schwartz will write, executively produce, and is a co-showrunner, with Mickle, who is also acting as a director. Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell will also executively produce alongside Linda Moran and Evan Moore producing. It is being produced by Team Downey in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Based on characters created for DC by Jeff Lemire, this marks the latest series project based on a DC Comics Vertigo property. Previous adaptations have included The CW’s iZombie, Lucifer, and AMC’s Preacher.
