‘Not a Stranger’ (2026) Netflix Series Review - A Slow-Burning Thriller That Gets Under Your Skin

Not a Stranger is the kind of plot that takes time to grasp and understand. And if you think this is just like any other thriller, then no, you are wrong. The narrative revolves around Funda, a new mother and a painter who has taken time off from her career after having a baby. She struggles to balance motherhood and marriage, and this is exactly what forms the core of Not a Stranger. Funda decides to hire a nanny, which on the face looks practical. She needs help with her daughter and also to get the much-deserved freedom in order to return to painting. When Nazli enters her life, she gives exactly what Funda needs. But all this doesn’t last for long. Funda soon starts to question how much she really knows about the woman she has trusted her child with. Nazli is not shown as an immediate threat to Funda and her family. In fact, if you think that the makers will show you age-old clues that portray Nazli as a threat, then that isn’t what happens. Instead, the makers let all of this settle down gradually. It’s the little moments that start feeling unsettling. With Funda continuing to depend on Nazli, how long can she stay away from the complications that come with it?

Many new mothers will relate to Funda. And that is how realistic her exhaustion and borderline frustration are shown to us. She is portrayed as tired, insecure, and overwhelmed in the current phase of her life and doesn’t know what needs to be done. All of this doesn’t mean she is not in love with her baby. But sometimes we tend to miss our versions from the past. This is exactly what Funda is dealing with in Not a Stranger. When it comes to acting, Elçin Sangu as Funda is flawless in a character with lots of flaws. It feels almost real seeing her show us the struggles of a new mom trying to save her marriage. There are layered emotions that Elçin Sangu displays effortlessly. And that is one of the biggest reasons to watch “Not a Stranger”.

This is a very unconventional thriller. There are a lot of mind games that are played with Funda. We see most of the things from her perspective, which makes you question if what she feels is right or just a fragment of her imagination. How can something that looks to be working in her favor not work out for her? These are just some of the many questions that will arise in your mind. As I said, if you expect a conventional thriller, then Not a Stranger is not for you.

The pacing is slow. Sometimes it works well for the narrative, sometimes it doesn’t. And there is honestly not much that you can do about it. For many viewers, this can be an annoying thing. But if you ignore that, Not a Stranger is a good watch. It can be relatable, and if not, even then it will make you empathic towards new mothers. And not to mention, there are twists and turns to intrigue you in the plot as well.
