With a total duration of 132 minutes, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba starts off where the first part left us. We saw how Rani and Rishu were successful in executing their plan and killed Neel. After doing so, the couple seeks refuge in Agra under false identities. While Rani is operating a beauty parlor, Rishu lives in the shadows. The couple seldom meets secretly and has the perfect plan ready in order to live together again. Things get chaotic as Kishore (the police officer) discovers their deeds and he's on a hunt to arrest Rishu.

The couple formulates yet another plan based on Dinesh Pandit’s works. Abhimanyu (played by Sunny Kaushal) plays an important part here. The details about his character can't be revealed as it would spoil the fun. What you can anticipate is a cat-and-mouse chase with police officers thirsty to catch the culprit. The case has been opened after five years and every possible attempt is being made to catch the couple.

Keeping in mind that Kanika Dhillon has written both parts of this film, the second one stands weaker. Though comparatively there are more twists and turns, this is the same reason that makes the film's core concept vile. The story is built around the characters and the countdown to the mystery unfolded doesn't keep you on your toes. Just after one suspense is over, the audience is shifted back into the suspense zone again. Now, this would've been a fun ride if good things were being established. I didn't understand the need for so many climaxes as it ruined the mood. After finishing the movie, I was doubtful about whether I should laugh as the plot was terrible or be thankful that this chaos ended at last.

These multiple climaxes went against the favour of the film and Kanika Dhillon could've opted for a single one which would've surmised them all. You'll be left in shock and unable to comprehend what she's doing with her characters, the same ones that made the first film a hit. Seeing how Haseen Dillruba is in the Top 10 Movies section of Netflix, one can understand the excitement people have. While the first one was wonderful and intelligent, this one overestimated itself and undervalued its cast.

The project has Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, and Sunny Kaushal, all of them are well known for their art yet somehow the makers and the writers have not utilized their talents. Massey had less screen time comparatively in the sequel and his magic was missing. Tapsee too in some scenes felt distant from her character Rani. Sunny Kaushal, the man of the movie undoubtedly carried the burden this time. Jimmy Shergill, playing Montu Chacha did an okayish job still, the aura and danger created around his character went unmatched with his actions and body language.

The sequel made another mistake and it introduced too many characters. When you take this road, either you should know how to balance your energies and screen time or they should be nonexistent for the main events. Unnecessary time was wasted upon them which could've been better utilized for Rani, Rishu, and Abhimanyu. The fans know that the first movie was about a married couple, an extramarital affair, comedy, and murder. There was a balance and I can hardly remember a dull moment. The previous one also featured songs in only pivotal scenes while this one focused on introducing retro songs without any context. The successor failed to learn from its predecessor and that's why some sequels should never be made.

When the last hour of the movie was left, I fell short of my snacks and my patience. It's only in the last thirty minutes or so that the romantic thriller remembers its purpose and things begin to fall on track. The track has so many turns that the rail fell off and we're left with hopes of things falling back. Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba thankfully in its final minutes reveals the mystery (hopes of which I had given up). The fault lies with the mindset of the writer who was overwhelmed with the response received from her previous work, she may have tried to overdo herself. There's no doubt that the writer has a great ending in her mind yet, the issue lies with her testing the audience's patience.

The duration of the film could've been easily cut short seeing how it only bores you in its first half. The reason behind this is, that things were repetitious. All the craze built around Montu Chacha’s ability to hunt his prey to hell was equivalent to the saying, barking dogs seldom bite. I was eager to see what Shergill would bring on screen. The second part of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba was tolerable. In all, this film is bound to disappoint the audience as the bar was set quite high after the first’s success.

Final Score – [5/10]
