Since there has been a lot of buzz around Frankenstein, this is the right time to watch and understand what exactly goes into the mind of its Oscar-winning director, Guillermo del Toro. So the documentary starts with some clips from his movie Pan’s Labyrinth, where he, alongside the clips, also explains the ideas behind them and the story. It goes on and on, and he soon tells us what inspired him to get into gothic tales. Terming his childhood as a nightmare yet a beautiful experience, Guillermo del Toro takes us through his family and how he got into the art of storytelling. If you observe closely, his art involves fairy tales, horror, and everything in between. He tells us that, according to him, a demon isn’t the one who you see on the outside in ragged clothes and a shabby skin. It is more like how you imagine things around your surroundings. And that is how he did. With Frankenstein, his latest addition to the horror/goth genre, his storytelling knack has just been refined in the years gone by. Probably that is why he is one of the best in this field. He takes us through his journey, including his much-celebrated Oscar-winning movie “The Shape of Water”. He also explains how he takes certain shots to capture what is inside the shot.

One thing about this documentary is that, if you haven’t watched his work, you will not enjoy Guillermo del Toro one bit. This is more like an inner reflection on his life and work. And without knowing who he is or what he has worked on or what he will work on in the future, you will find this entire thing very boring. And while I usually give my warnings to my sensitive viewers, here I am assuming that if you have watched his previous and latest work, you are okay with the graphics shown by him. So all in all, a warning might be pretty useless here. But this documentary, too, has its own share of graphics, which are more like clippings from the movie. Hence, it comes as no surprise. Also, he talks about Frankenstein in great detail. Therefore, if you are someone who likes watching Frankenstein or wants to know more about its making, this is your time to watch the man himself speak about it.

Other than that, the pacing is a bit problematic. It is very slow and makes you a bit frustrated while watching it. I felt that the documentary just dragged on and on. Maybe that could have been taken under control, but nonetheless. Other than that, Guillermo del Toro comes up and speaks candidly. That gives us a great insight into his work and how he tackles the subject, blending beauty, mystery, and gothic into his art to present us with some of the best masterpieces of all time. But like I said, only if you enjoy his work will you enjoy watching his documentary. If not, then the plot will not motivate you enough to watch it.

Final Score- [6/10]
