For those who love watching thrillers, this is the right one for your weekend watch. She Walks in Darkness is the story of Amaia, played by Susana Abaitua, who is a Guardian Civil Officer. She agreed to go undercover and infiltrate ETA’s ranks, knowing very well that there was a grave danger involved to her own life in doing so. She has only one aim of doing what she is about to unearth the arms supplies that are hidden in South France. In all this, we must not forget that she has to maintain her cover, else her life will end in the hands of the enemies. The film spans over years, and we are shown how the life of a spy shapes up between 1992 and 2004. On the face of it, she will appear to be an ordinary woman, but she is far from being “ordinary”. At a time when ETA created a menace, even killing people and children, Amaia’s contribution proved to be very crucial.

What makes the movie a good watch is not only because of the plot, but also the fact that the makers didn’t assume that the viewers who will watch it already know the backstory. Right when you start watching it, the movie opens with real-life clippings of news and other visuals of ETA. Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Basque conflict, the makers provide us with sufficient information. Of course, this isn’t a documentary, but the way it has been made makes it a great watch. The visual appeal takes you back to the era when all this was taking place. Such great storytelling has been done through the plot and the way it has been shot.

Coming to the pacing, yes, that is slow. But not because it doesn’t have content, but because makers want us to understand the motive behind each move and scene. So as the plot progresses, you will have no confusion regarding anything. However, at one point, you may get bored with it.

The cast has done a great job, especially Susana Abaitua, who plays Amaia. Her varied display of emotions makes you want to watch her more and more. She offers us just what we expected out of her in her portrayal of Amaia. Even the supportive cast, like Andrés Gertrúdix, Iraia Elias, etc, also does a great job in supporting the plot. These are the reasons why people are going there to watch it.

Yes, for sure, you will have to use your detective brain and watch attentively for the plot to make sense. When you, as viewers, do that, the makers are there to support you with the information they have added. But if you are someone who wishes for a light watch, you might want to reconsider your option, as this film requires attention and patience while watching it. Again, if history is not your domain, kindly watch something else if you aren’t interested in trying. Other than that, spy chronicles are always fun to watch. Hence, many of you will enjoy watching the film.

Final Score- [7/10]
