We know most love stories shown to us in films and TV shows have grand gestures, sometimes a good reunion, and most importantly, endings that can either be sad or happy. But this is where The Loved One takes a different route. The plot revolves around Eric and Ellie. Eric sends a message to Ellie, which reads “love you still,” but receives no reply. He is waiting for her at a café. But the meeting is not to win her back; it is to sort out the things these two have from the life they once shared. Soon, we are taken back in time to a past that contains happy memories of the couple. We are shown how he and Ellie first met, their intimate moments, and the bond they shared. Eric considered himself the one who loved more and was involved more in the relationship. According to him, the breakup took place because Ellie grew emotionally distant, and soon things became frustrating for him. Midway through this, we are taken into Ellie’s perspective of what went wrong in the relationship. Ellie says that for her, the main aim was always to find herself in life and in their relationship. Slowly, she started feeling trapped by the expectations of the relationship.

Soon enough, we are taken through the phase of their arguments. Words became hurtful, and there was a lack of understanding on both sides. Issues that could have been managed and put to rest easily became prolonged. Both Eric and Ellie are aware that the relationship is failing, but neither of them wishes to accept their parts in the downfall. For ten years, this continued. Now, both speak of the lives they are currently living, calmly acknowledging the relationship they lost without making an effort to save it.

For many people, the plot of The Loved One might seem relatable. People in love often get weighed by that very love. It teaches us that some relationships end not because the love disappears, but because two people can no longer support each other. Their growth gets stagnated by the same love that once uplifted them. Even a relationship of ten odd years can come to an end if two people grow apart and become independent of it. This is exactly what happened between Ellie and Eric.

If you are searching for a definite ending in The Loved One, you might not get it. The ending is sort of open for you to interpret. What goes in favor of the plot is how both perspectives are shown to us. There is no blaming or yelling that comes along once they decide to meet. Both know their faults, but continue to focus on the mistakes committed by others. So if you are expecting answers, then that is your work to do as per the makers of the movie. It is for us to reflect and learn from Eric and Ellie. Along the way, some of us might even see ourselves through them, which is exactly what the movie aims to do.

The themes of The Loved One are quite mature. It isn’t the type of plot you can watch just for the sake of it. It takes you on a journey with a former couple. And to understand that, you need to devote time to the plot. I am sure, once you do, you won't be disappointed.

When it comes to character development, the makers have put in a lot of thought while creating the characters. Now, we see much more mature versions of Eric and Ellie recollecting and reflecting on the ten-year-old relationship. There has been a growth when comparing the two versions. This growth forms a significant part of the plot. Even though there is a bit of back and forth in the movie, the makers have managed to maintain that clarity. Hence, rest assured, you won't be getting confused while watching.

Final Score- [8/10]
