The TikTok Killer has to be one of the most gripping documentaries I have watched in a while. The plot blows your mind and scares you, too, at the same time. At the core is Esther Estepa, who disappears in the year 2023 during a trip to Spain. When she goes missing, her family is shaken and is filled with questions, the answers to which are rarely there. Soon enough, their discoveries led them to José Jurado Montilla, a traveller and a content creator who is frequent with his daily postings online about his usual trips. What sends a shock down the spine is the fact that José Jurado Montilla had met Esther Estepa right before her disappearance. Initially, he seems to be like any other ordinary travel blogger who shares his adventures with the world via social media. But as and when the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that maybe his meeting with Esther Estepa wasn’t a coincidence and that it might be a deliberate move on his part.
The main thing for us to notice is how different his personality is from the online version that he presents versus the offline version he presents.
Now, what makes this documentary worth every watch is the fact that it has used video clippings and a clever narrative to show us what exactly José Jurado Montilla is as a man. That contrast of his online and offline personality has been well crafted for us to see what a dangerous man he is. It also gives us an idea of the life that people fake on social media and the life that they lead for social media.
It serves as a warning for us to be careful of our surroundings, no matter what happens. Another good thing is that while much of the documentary revolves around José Jurado Montilla and Esther Estepa, we are shown what the family of Esther Estepa is going through until now. It shows us well the life that people lead when a loved one disappears from their life with no trail to be found anywhere. And it is indeed sad what they undergo in their life. Their emotional journey also forms a big part of the two-episode documentary. It is a heartbreaking journey, and oftentimes I found myself thinking about Esther Estepa. Perhaps that was the main aim of the makers?
The best thing is that the documentary is quick-paced and doesn’t take much time. It has just two episodes, which are enough for you to gauge your attention while also retaining the incident. With the help of archived footage and interviews, a good narrative is built and presented to us. I feel that is what makes all the difference. They have crafted the entire incident so well in just two episodes, something which isn’t as easy as one might think.
Other than that, if you are someone who is into shows like this, The TikTok Killer is a great watch. It offers you depth and insight into Esther Estepa’s life. It is fast-paced, so it naturally becomes a quick watch for you.
Final Score- [8/10]
