Loki has always been a character who claimed to be burdened with a glorious purpose, but never quite knew what that purpose was. In the season 2 finale of the Disney+ series, he finally discovers his true destiny, and it involves making a grand sacrifice for the sake of the multiverse.
The episode picks up right where the previous one left off, with Loki using his time-slipping abilities to go back to the TVA and try to fix the Temporal Loom, which is on the verge of collapsing due to the infinite branching timelines. Along the way, he reunites with his friends Mobius, O.B., Casey, Hunter B-15, and Victor Timely, who help him devise a plan to expand the Loom's capacity and restore order to the Sacred Timeline.
However, no matter how many times Loki goes back in time and tries to improve the plan, he fails to prevent the Loom from overloading and erasing all the timelines except the Sacred one. He realizes that the only way to stop this from happening is to go back even further, to the moment when Sylvie killed He Who Remains at the end of season 1, and prevent her from doing so.
But this proves to be harder than he expected, as Sylvie is determined to end the tyrant who created the TVA and the Sacred Timeline. Loki has to face her multiple times, and each time he fails to convince her to spare He Who Remains. He even has a heart-to-heart conversation with the Kang variant, who reveals that the Loom is designed as a failsafe to protect the Sacred Timeline from the chaos of the multiverse and that Loki has two choices: to kill Sylvie and preserve the status quo or to destroy the Loom and unleash a war where nothing survives.
Loki is torn between his love for Sylvie and his duty to the multiverse, but he ultimately decides to follow his glorious purpose and break the Loom, even if it means risking his own life. He puts on his full Loki suit and walks into the radiation that kills Timely and manages to destroy the Loom before it can erase all the timelines. He then uses his enchantment powers to gather the dying branches and return to the end of time, where he takes the throne that He Who Remains left behind. He becomes the new weaver of time, and shapes the multiverse into the form of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, with himself at its center.
The season 2 finale of Loki was a thrilling and emotional conclusion to the series, as it showed Loki's character development and his acceptance of his role as a hero. He went from being a selfish and deceptive trickster to being a selfless and noble god, who was willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good. He also proved his love for Sylvie, by letting her go and choosing to save the multiverse instead of staying with her. He fulfilled his glorious purpose and became the true God of Stories.
The episode also set up the stage for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it introduced the concept of the multiverse and the possibility of different versions of characters and events. It also hinted at the presence of Kang the Conqueror, the main villain of the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, who is a variant of He Who Remains. The multiverse will also play a key role in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the third season of Loki, which has been confirmed by a post-credits scene.
