Eugenio Derbez will star in the newly announced movie ‘Lotería’ on Netflix. The film will be directed by Emmy Award Nominee James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, The Muppets) from a script by Roberto Orci (Transformers, Mission Impossible III, Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens) and J.R. Orci (The Blacklist, Fringe) based on a story by Roberto Orci and Adele Heather Taylor.
The film will follow a recently widowed father played by Derbez looking to bond with his kids who end up with more than he bargained for when an old family deck of Lotería Don Clemente cards comes to life. The family is hurried on a globe-trotting journey to reveal the secrets of the deck and keep it from falling into the hands of a mysterious business magnate with insidious plans.
The movie is inspired by the original Lotería Don Clemente game. A traditional game of chance, similar to Bingo, has gained popularity in Mexico and Latin America. The game dates back to the 15th century in Italy, but the famous iconography and version of the game that is played today were devised and popularised by Don Clemente Jacques in 1887.
Derbez also serves as producer for 3Pas alongside Ben Odell. Eric and Kim Tannenbaum are also producers, previously they executive produced ABC’s Home Economics, the Last OG for TBS, and acclaimed series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for NBC.
For 3Pas, Odell and Derbez just completed The Valet for Lionsgate, starring Derbez. De Viaje con Los Derbez, their freshly launched unscripted show, is the most-watched series in Amazon history.
Lotería Don Clemente, which has Spanish origins, is the best-selling board and activity game in Mexico and is a well-known game in both Mexico and the United States.
